Weekly Geeks 2011.10: The Bookish Me

It's been awhile since I've done a Weekly Geek assignment. It's about time, right? This week we are to list ten things about us with regard to books and reading. Our bookish personality of sorts. Whatever goes. Here's what I've come up with:

1. Do you ever take a book, usually new but sometimes old, and stick your nose completely into it and inhale deeply? Yep, I do that, quite a lot actually. Ah the smell of books. I love it!

2. As far as the actually physical book itself... I like to read trade paperbacks. Mass market ones are too little, and hardbacks are too big.

3. One of my favorite things is to fall in love with an author and then read ALL their books!

4. It used to be I didn't know how to answer this question: "Are you a plot driven reader or a character driven one?" Hmmm... that's easy now. Guesses anyone? Yep... characters for me.

5. I can read with all sorts of outside distractions... TV, music, kids, noise, people talking, etc. BUT, I have a hard time reading if there's any internal distractions going on. That's why it's hard for me to read while flying (too nervous) or waiting (too anxious... well depending on what I'm waiting for) or if I'm just plain worrying or stressed about something in my life.

6. Reading in bed at night is great, but I enjoy reading in the morning (on weekends of course) even better. My eyes stay open then!

7. I don't think it will come as a surprise that I like to have more than one book going at a time. You can get more read this way, right? Doesn't it work that way?

8. I'm not much of a note taker while reading, and I don't underline and mark up the book. I find it messes with the flow of things.

9. I'm a surface reader, not a deep one. I read for the enjoyment of it, and not for the underlying meanings. That's not to say I don't find the underlying meanings interesting now and then, it's just that I don't necessary look for them much.

10. I enjoy both sad and happy ending books. Sad ones tend to stick with me, and have the greatest impact, but it's best if the story is left with a sense of hope. Happy ones are simply the most fun though, and sometimes I get really bugged if an author sees fit to deny us that happy ending!

Are we the same with any of the bookish habits I've listed?  I'd love to know what your bookish personality is. Do a post and come over and link up at Weekly Geeks.

  1. I'm definitely a trade paperback girl, too. Trade paperbacks fit in my purse, but they aren't so *cheap* feeling. I always read in bed before I go to sleep, but I'm like you that I prefer that morning reading time when I can get it - when I'm fresh!

Last year I finally scrapped the whole reading more than one book at a time thing because I found that for me, I actually ended up reading *less* because of reading *more* at one time. Crazy, huh? ;-)

  2. I love the smell and feel of real books and I prefer Trade paper backs but I do buy a lot of hard backed books if I can get them cheaper on amazon.

I can only read one book at a time (except for the scriptures) and I usually read at night when the kids are in bed but I can read through the distraction of TV or my husband.
I love character driven stories too. People are just so interesting.

  3. 1. Me, too. I even noticed that my six year old is a booksniffer, too, and has been since she was a toddler.

2.I agree. And have you noticed the very wide Mass Market paperbacks? They seem wider than trade paperbacks. There are quite a few of them at Costco. I picked one up, and instantly hated it because it's too wide for my small hands.

    3. Ditto!

    4. Also ditto.

    5. Haven't thought about it. I read while waiting for the dentist, doctor, etc.

    6. Anytime I can read without interruption is a major bonus, I don't care what time of day!

  4. I like to smell the books, too. And I'm the opposite of you with distractions- I can't read if there are lots (or very noisy) outside distractions, but reading is a great method for me to get away from my own mind (worries) so I employ it a lot for that. Especially late at night when I've seen a scary movie- I have to read something lighthearted to change my mood and be able to sleep!

  5. I love the smell of new paperbacks too, but I'm branching out into ebooks, so I'll have to get used to the smell of plastic casing. Or circuitry.

  6. I've really trained myself over the past couple of years to read while the tv is on. My hubby turns that sucker on the minute dinner is over and spends the rest of the night channel surfing. I can't stand to watch with him but I like to be where family is at. Love to read in bed but I'm with you, morning is best.

  7. We are a bit of the same mind.

    3. I do this frequently. So far I've only really gotten through Jane Austen's works, since she has a small number of them.

    4. I think I am this way to. Largely when I really into a book that I can't put down, its because I want to find out what happens with the characters.

    5. Me too. I'm usually reading in front of the tv, or with music on.

    6. Mornings are my guaranteed time for reading

    9. I'm the same. If I try to analyze and interpret a book, it feels too much like school and I disliked doing book reports and reviews in school

  8. Megan... yes I do find that read more sometimes means reading less too. I just WISH it were not the case!

Utah Mom: People ARE interesting! That's for sure!

Mouse: See I can't usually read while waiting for the doctor..sometimes, but not usually.

Jeane: Sometimes I suppose reading helps me to forget about life's worries. I guess it depends on what the worries are!

Robert: I like the smell of electronics too! Reminds me of Christmas morning!

Lisa: My husband isn't much of a TV watcher, but if he was, hopefully I'd be able to sit and read while he watched... and not just watch with him! :)

Sarah: There's so many authors who's books I want to catch up on! It's a never ending project. I love it though.
