Book Club: A Hunger Games/ Catching Fire Discussion

Not that I'm worried we'll have anything to talk about tomorrow night for my F2F book club discussion on The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, but still, I thought it would be fun to list some questions I'm thinking about and get the conversation going right here and now.

Feel free to post your answers in comments OR suggest other questions you think we should discuss.

  • What's your feeling about Katniss as a character? What are her strengths? What are her weaknesses?
  • The Love Triangle! Who do you like the best? Yet, who's better for Katniss? Is the answer the same? Or can we even know yet? And if you are firmly on one team or another, I want to know WHY... specific reasons!
  • What draws us to Peeta? And if you don't like him, why not?
  • Are you yearning to know more about Gale? How do you think he fits into, or will fit into, the story?
  • Secondary characters.... who's your favorite and why?
  • What are the differences between the two books? Did Catching Fire live up to your expectations? If not, why?
  • What do you think it is about these books that seem to capture us (or most of us anyway) so strongly? Is it the plot? The characters? The writing? The subject matter?
  • Are there parts that made you cry? If so, which parts and why?
  • Are there parts that made you laugh? If so, which parts and why?
  • Are there parts that made you cringe? If so, which parts and why?
  • Is there a certain direction you'd like this story to take? Have we been set up for some sort of climax that we will or will not be happy about? What questions MUST be answered in the next book in order to make you feel satisfied and pleased with the outcome?
Okay. I'd say that's plenty of questions for one book discussion! I'd love to know your answers, so start discussing in comments! Let the spoilers fly... and let this be fair warning to those who haven't read the books yet, comments will NOT be spoiler free.

  1. I think I've told you this already, but I'm firmly in the Team Katniss category. I dont' believe she should get together with Gale OR Peeta. While both guys are great, Katniss is not actually interested in either of them. Gale is like a brother to her, so their relationship feels far too incestuous to work. Peeta's nice and all, but it's too complicated and mixed up in what they've had to go through. Katniss will do a million times better if she ignores both boys and simply allows herself to stay alone the way she wants. I think the love triangle aspect to the story is completely unnecessary, particularly in Catching Fire.

I love Katniss. At least, I love her in the first book. She's so strong, but still has a blind spot. Unfortunately, the blind spot turns her into a weakling in book 2, which I didn't like...no, Catching First did not live up to my expectations.

I've read The Hunger GAmes 3 times since April and each time, as Katniss holds the bread from District 12 up and thanks them after Rue dies, I've cried. It's such a powerful line. I get teary just THINKING about it.

Okay, I think that's all I have time for right now. I wish I could go to your group!! :)

  2. I have to agree with Amanda - I don't think she should get together with either of them. She is clearly too young and not really in love with either of them. She has developed strong bonds/friendships with them, but that is different to true love.

I loved The Hunger Games, but didn't like Catching Fire at all. I thought it was just a repeat of the first book and wasn't as well written at all.

I'm hoping that the first book is original and takes me in an unexpected direction. I would hate there to be another Hunger Games!

  3. I'm kind of a Team Gale person, but it is more about which one I would choose over which one she should choose. I guess I can't separate my own personal preferences from what I think would be best for her.

Excited to see where the third book goes - I hope there will be no more games that Katniss must participate in!

  5. I'm mostly Team Gale, but I agree with the Melissa that he is a person I would choose, and I wouldn't be surprised if the trilogy is setting it up for Katniss not to be with either.

You asked for a reason: I think I've told you this before, but when Katniss steps up to take Prim's place at the first hunger games, and Prim tries to run to her, Gale holds Prim back. He tells Katniss to go on. That scene is one of those moments in books that totally shreds me, and makes me want to write a scene like that!

I thought Catching Fire was exactly what a sequel should be. It doesn't feel merely like a set up for the third book. And there's no trudging. I hate trudging.

  6. Okay I'm a little late in the Hunger Games train but I thought I'd give you a link to my answers to your questions!! It made me jealous that I'm not in a reading group. I love reading and I love getting everyone's opinions about books. I have a theory that even though a book has the same words written in every single copy it's a different story to each and every single reader and I love that!! Thanks for posting these questions to really make me think about what I was reading!!

  8. I'm gonna break this little pattern we have going by saying:

    TEAM PEETA ALL THE WAY!!!

I've laughed cryed and cringed with these characters and Ill cry when the series is over.

I guess I have never been a fan of the best friend falling in love with the girl, I was completey anti-Jacob when I read twilight so I guess its just part of me.
