A to Z Blogging: Oh, Baloney! (Or is it Bologna?)

Given the subject of this blog you'd think that with the letter prompt of B I'd be talking about Books, or maybe Bloggiesta, or even Boys (I'll probably talk about boys still, maybe even tomorrow!) but no, today I'd like to talk about Bologna. (I can't even write it without singing the commercial, you know the one? Well, here, I'll just show you.)

So I went grocery shopping yesterday. We needed snacks and lunch food for the kids. I saw bologna on sale and thought, oh, it's been awhile. I think so and so likes it, if I remember right. She's probably sick of PB and J and bagels. I'll get it!

I get home, she sees it, makes a face and says all incredulously, "You bought bologna? Ew."

"But wait, I thought you liked it?"

"Well, that was before everyone told me what was in it!"

Gah, what has the world come to that you can't even happily eat a bologna sandwich anymore?

So what is bologna anyway? I've done about a minute's worth of research and it appears to be based off an Italian sausage that is probably actually pretty good, if you like sausage anyway. It's mix of pork and beef and fat and spices.... and mixed down together to make a uniform paste. Maybe that's where we get grossed out?

My feeling is a bologna sandwich every now and then isn't going to kill you. Luckily, my daughter felt the same way and ended up taking her bologna sandwich to school despite her initial reluctance. (However, I wonder if she ate it?)

Here's to a good old American (or should we say Italian?) sandwich!

  1. Bologna is one of those things that I never particularly wanted, but liked it once I was eating it. I haven't had a sandwich in about twenty years though.

  2. I love a bologna sandwich about once a year. Mmmmm! With mustard and cheese. What a sweet reminder.

  4. I'm not a huge bologna fan. I used to love it, but now it just makes me feel sick. So, do most hot dogs. I think it's the spices. While most hot dogs and bologna make me go "blech" not all do. You just have to get the good stuff. But, alas, like I said, it makes me sick now.

And, I love that commercial. I make up songs to it ALL the time. Only one has stuck, though. It's an ode to my Darth Tater Mr. Potato Head.

My potato has a first name.
    It's D-A-R-T-H.
My potato has a second name.
    It's T-A-T-E-R.
I like to play with him every day and if you ask me why, I'll say...
'Cause my Darth Tater has his way with P-O-T-A-T-O yay.

  6. I used to take bologna sandwiches to school when I was a kid, but it has been years since I bought any. I am sort of a ham sandwich fan nowadays. haha. I was going to do the A-Z blogging but I forgot about it and now we are up to 'C'. I wonder if I should still join in late...

  7. I'm partial to the 'bologna' spelling myself. I railed against hotdogs and bologna as a kid (and this was before the internet and food documentaries!) ... mostly because I didn't like the taste, but every now and then I find myself craving some good ol' bologna on wonderbread slathered with mayo. :)

Thanks for linking up with Spread the Love!
