Music Stuck in My Head: Hallelujah

This week, my family started discussing all the versions of the ever popular Hallelujah song. My kids were amazed that this one was the original:

They recognize the song from Shrek:

I, however, fell in love with the song when Jason sang it:

Then I heard the Canadian Tenor version and wow, they blew me away too:

But most people seem to really love this version the best:

And that's just scratching the surface of the many many versions that are out there!

Are you fan of the song? Which version is your favorite?

  1. I'm definitely a Rufus Wainwright girl when it comes to this song, but I love all the versions.

  2. The Jeff Buckley version was the first time I heard this song, and the first time I heard Jeff Buckley, so that version will always be closest to my heart. I love it whoever sings it, though.

  4. I love this song, and one that begs from the artist a great amount of emotion within in their singing...emotion that translates to me. I do believe that Leonard Cohen will remain my favorite. Jeff Buckley, of course, did one amazing job with this song...such a shame this talent is dead. However, I do like Brandi Carlile's version a whole lot, and is my second favorite, but unfortunately the link I had to her version no longer exists...I found a different one but it is not a great video and she sounds a bit muffled, but I will share it anyway! After Carlile, I like Bon Jovi (of course), and then I like Rufus Wainwright.

I think the Canadian Tenors did a great job as did Jason Castro. Thanks for sharing the versions you found.

  6. It's funny you were thinking of this because I was on Youtube all day yesterday listening to it because I couldn't get it out of my head. I was shocked this was the original too. The Canadian Tenors is my favorites. You should listen to Lisa Lavie's version on youtube as well.

  9. Love this song! For my money, with a song this powerful song, you really need a simple accompaniment. The Wainwright version is my fave but that Buckley version is a close second. I would love to hear the Canadians Tenors and Sarah Mac do a version with no orchestration.

  10. Oh my goodness, I couldn't believe it when I saw your post. This song has been stuck in my head all afternoon as I sat doing report cards in my classroom. The Shrek version came on Pandora and then I was stuck until I had my fix of the Canadian Tenors. Now I have more to listen to!! THANK YOU! I do believe my ears are in for another treat! Now if we can convince Josh to sing it.....

  11. I was thinking about this song the other day. I have three versions of "Hallelujah" on my iPod - Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, and K.D. Lang - and the Wainwright version came on. Listening to it, I realized that I liked Jeff Buckley's version much better - it has more intensity and variation, and it remains my overall favorite. I should listen to Leonard Cohen's original one day, though.
