Top Ten Tuesday: You're Breaking My Heart!

The Broke and the Bookish has decided to go "anti" Valentine's Day today and list books that broke our hearts. I had no problem coming up with a few.

Top Ten Books That Broke My Heart

1. The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck... the sons at the end broke my heart in a big way.
2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak... Rudy? Please.
3. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski... not a happy ending at all.
4. The Road by Cormac McCarthy.... sadness all around, and then there's the dad and all.
5. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini... for you a thousand times over.
6. Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls... a fern growing up between dogs graves? Sobfest.
7. Charlotte's Web by E.B. White... who knew you could cry over a spider?
8. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott... the whole Laurie thing kills me every time!
9. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck... extremely depressing sad book.
10. Bel Canto by Ann Patchett... did it HAVE to end that way?

What books broke YOUR heart?

  1. You have some great choices here that I forgot!!! I can't believe I didn't think of Where The Red Fern Grows! That might've been the FIRST book to ever break my heart.

  2. I knew I'd forget some good ones! How could I have left out The Book Theif or Charlotte's Web? I'm a bad, bad book blogger!

  3. I totally forgot some of these childhood heart-breakers. I think Charlotte's Web would still make me cry.

  4. I never did read Charlottes web, seen the movie a lot but never read the books. Shame on me

  5. Oh, nice to see BEL CANTO on here. Such a book . . .

  6. If I had finished The Book Thief by the time I put this list up, I would've put it on my list too. But, I haven't finished it so I don't even know how it's going to fully affect me.

  7. Love your list this week. We are reading The Good Earth for Book Club. kaye—the road goes ever ever on

  8. Yeah, who knew you could cry over a spider?! Love the list. Um, I'm trying so hard to remember the ending of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. :(

  9. Fantastic choices, Suey! I have not read them all, but the ones on the list that I do recognise were very heartbreaking indeed, especially The Book Thief and The Kite Runner!

  10. Oh my gosh, the ending of Bel Canto! I can't believe I left that off my list.

  11. Ooh. Such good answers. I'm totally with you on most of this list. THE ROAD was particularly gut wrenching for me.
