Series Suggestions Needed

So, tomorrow night is our last book club meeting at my house. Until next fall that is. We take a summer break. But, I always like to figure out a fun "summer assignment."

This summer, we've decided we'd like to pick a series to read. Of course, it can't be too long, or too hard. Something we can handle reading in three month's time and something that doesn't make us feel too bogged down.

I told everyone I'd come up with a list of suggestions. The problem is, I've been too occupied with other life matters, and haven't had time to figure out a fun and varied list.

So I'm asking you, what fun, easy, light series would you suggest for us to read this summer?

  1. There's a 3-book series by Karin Gillespie that was fun to read: BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR, A DOLLAR SHORT, and DOLLAR DAZE.

An on-going series: MISS JULIA books by Ann B. Ross, starting with MISS JULIA SPEAKS HER MIND.

    MITFORD books by Jan Karon.

I'm on the fence about this on-going series but you might enjoy them: LUMBY books by Gail Fraser, starting with THE LUMBY LINES.

  2. For something light, I would suggest the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear...

I had other ideas but my mind just went blank! I am not a morning person. Off to make another coffee!

  3. I love the Lady Emily Ashton series by Tasha Alexander. The first one is "And Only to Deceive". There are currently three books and the fourth will be out in the fall.

  4. If you want a fun mystery series I highly recommend the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes books by Laurie R. King. I just discovered them earlier this year and LOVED them. In my opinion they read more like historical fiction most of the time.

Of course, you could always go for a sci-fi/fantasy series. OR you could each choose a series that is outside your normal comfort zone ... just a thought. :)

  5. I thought of one more: the Sarah Prine series by Nancy E. Turner. There are three books in all and the first one is "These Is My Words". The first one is quite possibly my very favorite book.

  6. I'm loving all these suggestions so far! Keep 'em coming. I'm going to make a list for tonight and hopefully we'll vote and come up with our series to read.

That is, if anyone comes. Sheesh, it's a busy time of year.

  7. I guess I'm too fantasy oriented, cause the first ones I came up with were Fablehaven (plus I have a giveaway going on for that), The Mortal Instruments (not exactly short, but they will keep you reading), and Percy Jackson.

  8. Ooh, some of my favorites have already been listed!

Another series of light, quick reads is Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Dealing with Dragons is the first. (They're yf or jf but tons of fun!) Or there's her Cecilia books-- Sorcery and Cecilia or the Enchanted Chocolate Pot is the first.

  9. The Outlander series is FANTASTIC. but it's long...so maybe you could do the first 2 or 3 books (or however many you get to) out of the 6 (7th is coming out in Sept.).

I've heard really fantastic things about the Jessica Darling series by Megan McCafferty (Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, up to Perfect Fifths) They are YA books so should be good summer reads. I haven't read them yet but have the first two sitting on my nightstand!

  10. As a light easy intro to Anne McCaffrey, we could read the three that start with Dragonsong.

I'm loving the Lightning Thief series, on the last one now.

I'll come back if I think of another, but the problem is, the ones I think of I have already read. :)

  11. Julie, I'm being the same way this time about it too, I want to read something I haven't read yet. I'm getting some good suggestions here.

Are you coming tonight? With the new baby? Babies are allowed you know! :)

  12. Miss Julia is very light.
The Goose Girl series by Shannon Hale (I've only read the first book)
Brother Cadfael mysteries set in 1100s Wales.
    The Shopaholic books
The Number 1 Ladies detective Agency
    The Eyre Affair series
    Anne of Green Gables series

  13. The Walsh Sister Series by Marian Keyes. It's more of an unoffical series, because you can read each of the novels on their own, but they are enjoyable light reads, but also have a series side too. Good for discussions.

    Here's the titles (in order):

    Watermelon
    Rachel's Holiday
    Angels
    Anybody Out There?

  14. It is probably too late, and probably too long, but the Clan of the Cave Bear series by Jean Auel is amazing.
