Top Ten Tuesday: Most Intimidating Books

Ah, there are so many scary books out there! Scary, as in, too hard, too long, too controversial, too buzzed about, too... I don't know... many many things!

Here are few that are on my list:

1. Ulysses by James Joyce
2. Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larrson
4. Clarissa by Samual Richardson
5. The Canterbury Tales Geoffrey Chaucer
6. The Wings of a Dove by Henry James
7. In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
8. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
9. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
10. War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (though I have read half!)

What books scare you a bit? Link on up over The Broke and the Bookish!

  1. I would agree with Tolstoy and Joyce on your list. I loved Canterbury Tales and have read some of the others.

  2. I'm intimidated by looooong books, like anything that's 400+ pages.

  3. Isn't Ulysses supposed to be the hardest book to read ever?I've read War and Peace and it's not that bad! The hardest part for me was keeping the characters straight, but I really liked it.

  4. Lolita is also on my list this week. Something about that is super intimidating to me!

  5. Lolita is really good if you can find a copy of the audio read by Jeremy Irons!

  6. I can't believe I've actually read 4 on your list!
    2.3.7.9

    Only Lolita is intellectually challenging.

Tattoo - disturbing (looks long, reads *really* fast)
In Cold Blood - gruesome, disturbing, but a great read. It's speculated that Harper Lee wrote a lot of it!
Picoult - heart breaking, but again, really fast because you'll want to keep reading

  8. Great list! I haven't read any of these because they're so intimidating. I plan to read a lot of them. But, I think I'll pass on Lolita. I don't think I could handle it.

  9. In Cold Blood is a really good book and not at all difficult (well, the topic is, but the writing itself flows well). It's a good way to start tackling the list :)
