Once Upon a Time....

... there was a book challenge. And everyone's signing up like crazy! So why would I not? Click here to get to Carl's blog about all the details, if you are interested in joining. He has several different levels of the challenge, as he always does, and I'm choosing to do:

Quest The Second: Read one book from each category which are: folklore, mythology, fantasy and fairy tale. Here's a list of some books I want to read that I hope fits into a category some how:

The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan: (fantasy)
The Swan Maiden by Jules Watson: (folklore)
Percy Jackson book #2: (mythology)
Princess Ben by Catherine Gilbert Murdock (fairy tale)
The Princess and the Bear by Mette Ivie Harrison (fairy tale)
A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn (fairy tale)
Lady of the Forest by Jennifer Roberson (folklore)
The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner (fantasy)
The Lost Years of Merlin by T.A. Barron (folklore)

Well, that should work! I'm a little sparse in the mythology category. Any suggestions for me there?

  1. I love this challenge. I have participated in it two years now and it has really stretched me. I read Princess Ben for it a year or so ago and really liked it. A strong female protagonist!!

I read The Night Tourist by Katherine Marsh last summer and it was the retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice that was quite different and takes place in New York City. I am going to sign up quickly before sanity gets hold of me.

  2. That's a lovely list!

Viz mythology -- Odd and the Frost Giants, by Neil Gaiman, is a lovely little book featuring the Norse gods...or there's his book for grown-ups, American Gods...

  4. I look forward to your thoughts on The Lost Years of Merlin! I enjoyed it, but sadly not quite as much as I was hoping to.

  5. Oooh! Great list. You'll love The Thief, and then you'll have to read Queen of Attolia and King of Attolia and then Conspiracy of Kings. :-)

    Great list.
