Booking Through Thursday: Peer Pressure

Booking Through Thursday
This question suggested by JM:

I was looking through books yesterday at the shops and saw all the Twilight books, which I know basically nothing about. What I do know is that I’m beginning to feel like I’m the *only* person who knows nothing about them.

Despite being almost broke and trying to save money, I almost bought the expensive book (Australian book prices are often completely nutty) just because I felt the need to be ‘up’ on what everyone else was reading.

Have you ever felt pressured to read something because ‘everyone else’ was reading it? Have you ever given in and read the book(s) in question or do you resist? If you are a reviewer, etc, do you feel it’s your duty to keep up on current trends?

Good question. I will say that I don't feel pressure or duty to keep up with what everyone else is reading. I would say that I desire too, I want to, I like to!

However, there are a few books that I do resist, not many though, because I just feel I'll not like them, or they'll make me crazy, so I don't bother. (A couple of examples: Middlesex, Under the Banner of Heaven, In Cold Blood, etc.)

There are times though that "resistance is futile," and I'll read a popular book even if I don't think I'll like it and then end up love it. The Kite Runner is a great example of this. We all know it has uncomfortable moments, yet it's an amazing book with an amazing story. The Life of Pi is another example too. I wondered, "what's the big deal." Then I read it, then I knew!

P.S. Don't forget to come visit me tomorrow when author Kathleen McCleary stops by on her blog tour for House and Home!

  1. I feel the same way. The Road by Cormac McCarthy had a ton of hype before I read it and I was worried I would hate it. But as we know, I ended up loving the book, though its not a book I normally would have chosen to read or even given into reading.

  2. I really only read books that have some appeal to me. However I read so many different things that I usually find something enticing about every book. But if something really hyped holds no interest to me, I just go on to something else.
