Book Review: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Book: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating: ★ ★ ★

I thought while I was feeling the love for Six of Crows, I might as well totally immerse myself in this world created by Leigh Bardugo. Because yes this book, while being a different series, takes place in the same magical world. This book was popular even before the Six of Crows book, and why has it taken me so long to read them? I don't know!!

So this story follows our orphan girl Alina as she finds out that she has a power that the Darkling, a not so nice ruler of the people, wants for himself. He tells her that together they will save the world, but is he to be trusted?

Either way, she is taken by him to be groomed and trained in order to help him and she can't believe that this is really happening to her. She doesn't even believe she truly has this power. And all she wants is to go be with her childhood friend who she has suddenly realized that she actually loves with all her heart... and live as simply as they always have.

But her life is totally changed now and that's probably never going to happen. And she figures he has forgotten all about her anyway. And the Darkling's charm is hard to deny.

So will she end up helping him? Or end up finding her childhood love again? Will she help save the world? Or destroy it?

Ah! This book, while more simply told than Six of Crows, has the same richness that I enjoyed before. And once I again I find myself invested in these characters and so... on to the second book! But first, I will read the second book that follows Six of Crows, since I know have that one in hand! Bouncing back and forth between these two series could get confusing for us all! But here we go!

  1. I think I read this a long long time ago, and I can't remember a thing about it. Nothing in your review rings a bell either. I guess I need to re-read.

  2. Finished this on our long drive. I ended up really liking it. Phew! It started out bumpy for me so I’m glad I ended up liking it. I’m going to get right to the second one.
