Book Review Discussion and Giveaway: The Eternity Key by Bree Despain

Book: The Eternity Key by Bree Despain
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating:★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
For: Review
From: Received for free from the author. All opinions are my own. (To be released April 28, 2015)

Short Synopsis: This book picks up shortly where The Shadow Prince left off. Daphne, Haden and the others are back from their adventures in Utah. Daphne's raving mad at her dad for some things she learned about him, Haden is scared something is going to happen to Daphne so he's stalking her house every night and Tobin is even more determined to find his sister. While on their adventure, a guy on a motorcycle ran off with the compass that will allow them to get the key that will allow them to open the gates to Hades, which then will allow them to stop the Underrealm from releasing the monsters into the world. So, they've got to find that guy. And then they've got to find that key, and then Daphne can open the gate. And then... well...

My Response:  Whew. Yes, it's a little complicated but in a crazy fun and lovely way! The characters that I grew to love from the first book get even more interesting in this one. Daphne discovers her own power, Haden is full of all sorts of vulnerability and Tobin is not completely and totally what he seems. I was getting a bit nervous when I started approaching the end, you know that feeling of there's no way there's enough book left to fix all that's going on here! Yeah, and well, I was right! There was not enough book! This is the only reason why I docked a star off this rating because, yeah, that ending. Oh boy.

Bottom Line: This sequel is just as engaging as the first with a story line just as crazy and characters just as fun. You really should read these books!

Let's Talk About: We've already talked about books based on mythology. We like them, right?! What about books with music as strong element? We like them too, right? Actually, I love them. How about you?

Other Reviews:

Holy crap! As Emeril says, “Let’s kick it up a notch! BAM!” Yeah, Bree definitely kicked it up a notch with The Eternity Key. From Jenni Elyse

From the very moment I picked up this book, I remembered exactly why I loved Haden so much. He was his normal, charming, underworld self. (If charming can be used to describe him at all.) Seriously, I think I like him so much because he's such an honest character. From Chasm of Books

As I said before, the last third of the book was wonderful. I flew through it and now I can't wait to read the next one. From Challenging Reads

The ending is definitely the killer! The kind of ending that leaves you screaming! And I did! There was so much action, so much danger, so much suspense! From A Great Read

The Giveaway: Today, the giveaway for The Shadow Prince that I've had going on for a couple of weeks ends, (I'll announce the winners in another post soon.) But now you can enter win an ARC of this book, The Eternity Key. And yes, it's also signed! Same procedure as before, just fill out the form with your info and then I'll choose a random winner next week on May 3. Good luck!

The Shadow Prince Giveaway

I have two copies of The Shadow Prince to giveaway. Who wants one!??

When I read this book last year, I gave it a five stars. Which means, of course, that I loved it! (Here's my review if you want a reminder.) But if you don't want to click over here's what I said:

I loved this book. The plot was awesome and fun and a wonderful take on the Hades/Persephone myth with lots of other myths also alluded to. It was great. The characters are fun, especially Haden who has this strange upbringing and is introduced to a world where this upbringing is completely wacko. He changes so much! Anyway, I just thought it was really fun and page turning and one of those books that I couldn't stop thinking about when I wasn't reading.

This book just came out this week in paperback and I have two copies... two SIGNED copies I should say. If you would like one, fill out the form with your info and I'll pick two random winners on Monday April 27. At that time, I'll have another giveaway for the sequel to this book, The Eternity Key!

Good luck!!

Book Review, Blog Tour and Giveaway: Begin Again by Brittney Mulliner

Book: Begin Again by Brittney Mulliner
Genre: YA Romance
Rating:★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
For: Blog Tour
From: Book Blast Blog Tours. All opinions are my own.

Short Synopsis: Escaping her past, Aubrey Tate moves to Southern California for a fresh start with her older brother, Brandon. Starting over at a new school seems easy with her cousin, Mckayla, and her two best friends at her side, but handling the new guys is another matter. Aubrey ends up in the middle of three rivals that each want her to themselves. Mike claims her first and declare himself her friend and protector. Luke is the school heartthrob that stops Aubrey in her tracks, speechless. Gage is the mysterious, dark outsider that Aubrey can be herself around. How will she navigate her new life while she's still haunted by her past?

My Response: A fun and fluffy story about a rich privileged girl, which I found interesting because it seems most of the YA stories are about characters who are struggling to survive. But this girl has it all, except one thing, she has crappy parents. Also, some pretty scary stuff happened that made her leave to go live with her brother. We only get a little taste of this incident and I was curious to know more. Maybe that's to come in the following books. But anyway, she acclimates really well and really fast and soon has her pick of several guys. While I enjoyed the story, I found myself rolling my eyes at much that happened. Maybe I just couldn't relate. It was almost like things were too easy... until the end when we get a glimpse that maybe all is not well after all.

Bottom Line: Fun, cute, easy to read romance full of a bunch of interesting characters.

About the Author Brittney Mulliner:

Brittney has been an avid reader since she can remember. Her parents' form of punishment for her growing up was taking away her books and making her go outside to play. She was born and raised in Southern California, with a brief hiatus in Arizona. She loves the beach, exercising, sleeping in, and cookies. She is an obsessive dog lover, although her affection currently has no outlet. Something that she is planning on remedying soon. She currently lives in Utah while she and her husband finish college.

Book Review Discussion and Giveaway: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Book: A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray
Genre: YA Science Fiction
Rating:★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
For: Review

From: Received for free from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Short Synopsis: Marguerite's really smart physicist parents have created a device that allows its wearer to jump between dimensions. Not time, but alternate universes... places were other copies of people exist depending on the decisions they've made in their lives. As the book opens, Marguerite is stark raving mad because someone, and she thinks she knows who, has killed her father in order to get their hands on this technology. And now he's escaped to other realities. She and her friend Theo are off to travel through these alternate realities, in order to find him and perhaps kill him. Hang on for the ride!

My Response: Awesome! I loved this story and could not put it down. I've read a lot of time travel books but not much about alternate reality travel. This is sort of new, yes? And the other versions of Marguerite live in some pretty interesting places. The romance is especially swoony too and the twists, while not over-the-top mind boggling, are nevertheless very satisfying. There was a bit of science explaining in the beginning, which I have a short attention span for, but it was over quickly and the story moved along despite it, so it turned out okay.

Bottom Line: I loved it and found the adventure to be a blast to experience.

Let's Talk About: This made me wonder about other alternate reality books. This one is being compared to Cloud Atlas, which I have not read. Any others you can think of that you'd like to make me aware of? This just might be my new favorite thing! How about you? Are you a fan of such a thing? Would you want to see what your alternate lives could be? Does that thought make you crazy?

Other Reviews:

If you’re looking to test yourself with a more complicated plot and multi-dimensional characters, A Thousand Pieces of You is definitely the way to go. From Fiction Folio

Just read the book! Especially if you love science fiction. Because you will adore this then. From City of Books

It is an intricate story that keeps you on your toes. From Bloody Bookaholic

All of that made this fun, but what really blew me away about his book was the romance. In between all of the parallel universe jumping, there is a really wonderful romance that blossoms. From Ex Libris

Giveaway:

I ended up with two copies of this lovely book, so that means I get to give one away! As usual, I like to keep my giveaways very simple, so please fill out the form below with your info if you are interested in winning this book. I will pick a random winner in ONE WEEK (next Friday Nov. 14th) and let you know by email if you win. Good luck!!

BUT WAIT! I can give away one thing! See the end of the list for details!

This movie will probably go down as my favorite of the year
simply for is most uniqueness

It took me awhile to "get" Spotify, but wow, I get it now!
I got this phone for my birthday and have been loving it!

Not sure why it took me so long to jump on this bandwagon,
but I'm there now! So SO there!

I could eat a whole box in one sitting.

I can't get enough of this show,
even if the characters make me crazy!

Who knew a freaking steel tower
and the city it's in could be so fascinating?
Well, I'm sure some of you knew,
but I wasn't convinced until this year.

We discovered this cookie in England. I hear it's a thing.

And then there was that time
Josh Groban made a new album!

T-shirt Winners and What We Learned from The Book Thief

Time for our Book Thief t-shirt drawing! We've picked three winners!

But first, in order to enter the contest, everyone had to say what they learned from this book. And I loved everyone's comments! I hadn't planned on sharing these, so I hope it's okay with you all that entered, but they were just too good not to share. Anyway, since this wasn't in the plan, I didn't ask for your blogs (if you even have one) so I haven't linked to anyone (even if I actually do know who some of you are!)

So here's what you said you learned:

Words are important and can save someone. From April

Death and life intermingle. From Taffy

I learnt that there's always a light at the end of the tunnel - as cheesy as that sounds. Just because we're going through a tough time doesn't mean it's the end of the world. There will be bad things and there will be good things. From Fatma Shahin

That sometimes it's okay to read something based on the hype. From Kristilyn

I thought it was a really interesting perspective on Nazi Germany. It made me think a lot about how hard it could have been to be a German at the time. From Katie

The biggest thing I learned was that there is beauty in the midst of destruction— pure good in the midst of pure evil. How beautiful qualities like hope, courage, and compassion can come out of terrible things like war, death, and greed. From Hannah

I learned that words have incredible power to for life or death. I also learned that life must be lived now, while you have it, because it can be taken away at any time. From Jordanne

That the greatest gift we can give is to love be loved in return. That there is always good and evil and hope and despair. That what we say and write has power and That man is capable of evil and great goodness. The goodness is to be treasured. From Rachel

Hitler sucks. He cause horror even to his own people. From Jenni Elyse

This book made me wonder if I would or could respond in the same way under such pressure. Would I treat those that need help the same way? From Josanna

Just ONE thing? I think I'm going to go with words and how important it is for us to use them for good. Even if our words don't do anything that will change the world, they may change someone's personal world. Does that make sense? For example, Liesel's words didn't change the outcome of WWII. They didn't change Hitler. But they changed Rudy's world, Han's and Rosa's worlds, the mayor's wife's world, and Max's world. We all have that same power. From Britney

I thought it was interesting to think about the German side of the war and to consider how they felt and suffered also. From Erin

Awesome stuff don't you think? I love it.

And now the winners after plugging numbers into Random.org:

First winner: Kristilyn (won the gray shirt)
Second winner: Taffy (won the white shirt)
Third winner: Josanna (won the green shirt)

Congratulations! We'll be contacting you by email to get your mailing addresses! Enjoy the shirts! Wear them to the movie! :)

And thanks again to everyone who participated in our read along. We've had a blast reading this awesome book with you! We think we're going to have to do it again sometime soon with a whole new book!

Book Thief Read Along Final Discussion: Parts 7 to the End, and a Giveaway!

And already (or should I say finally!) our Book Thief read along has come to an end! I hope all those who have participated have enjoyed the fun, both those reading for the first time and those re-reading. It's a great book, is it not?

Today, the discussion is being hosted by Kathy from Read This Instead. She has some great questions, and so here they are with my answers. Beware: some spoilers ahead!

1. How did you feel when Max had to leave the Hubermanns? What did you expect would happen to him?

That was crazy sad and and of course I thought it was over for him. I had no idea what he would figure out to do ore where he would. One thing is for sure, he's one strong dude.

2. Why do you think Liesel ran out to Max when they finally did cross paths, even after she had seen what happened to Hans earlier in the book?

Because the power of her love and concern for him totally outweighed the fear of what might happen. Though I do think that even if she wasn't scared for herself, she should have considered the consequences for him! But anyway, I think it was worth it for both of them that they got some contact. What a sad scene though. Ugh.

3. What did you think of Death spoiling the ending a couple chapters before it actually happened? Did the warning make it easier to handle?

Not really, no matter how much we knew what was going to happen, it was still hard. And always always always, I hope that it will end a different way. The first time I read it, I hoped that somehow, something would happen to make Death's predictions not be right.

4. Which death impacted you the most?

Rudy, always Rudy. The others are sad too, but it's always Rudy that sticks in my mind. However, this time I was especially moved by Rosa's probably because so many of you reading this for the first time hated her in the beginning and I knew you would come around and so I was paying more attention to the Rosa parts and her actions and so when it described her end, and Liesel saying goodbye, that's when the tears came for me.

But, speaking of Rudy, I thought I'd share a little clip here. Here is Markus Zusak reading a bit from his book, about Rudy. Let's just say, he had us all holding our breaths. (P.S. If you want more of his speech that day, let me know and I'll send you links. Some of it's on YouTube, but much of it is "unlisted" because they weren't happy with me putting the whole thing up!)

 5. How did your view of Ilsa Herman change over the course of the book?

She was amazing really. She has a beautiful soul, she GOT Leisel, maybe better than any other person in the book. That fact made me so happy. And I totally forgotten that they take care of her in the end. Wow. She is a really amazing character too.

6. The power of words is such a big theme throughout the book. Which instances of powerful words stuck out to you? Or, which quotes from the book stuck out to you?

I tried to tweet some of the quotes that stuck out. I succeeded sometimes and failed other times, but just for fun, here are the some of the quotes that I ended up tweeting, just in case you missed them!

"It kills me sometimes, how people die." "They were going to Dachau, to concentrate." "One was a book thief, the other stole the sky.""There were stars," he said. "They burned my eyes.""They were not sent there for a shower." "Better that we leave the paint behind," Hans told her, "than ever forget the music."”So many humans. So many colors.”"Like red rain clouds on the white-sky canvas at their feet." "Trust me, though, the words were on their way...""Liesel, upon seeing those eyes, understood that Hans Hubermann was worth a lot.""That's the sort of thing I'll never know or comprehend--what humans are capable of.""If you feel like it, come with me. I will tell you a story.""I walked in, loosened his soul, and carried it gently away.""Here is a small fact. You are going to die."

7. In this post Markus Zusak says:

In many ways I felt that the book is about Liesel’s different kind of loves - for Hans, for Rosa, for Rudy and Max, and for books and living in general.

Which of those loves resonated with you most?

Interesting quote, because I always think that the power of words is what this book is so much about. But no, it really is about love, isn't it. I really don't know how to answer this question because each of those relationships are so powerful. I love them all!

8. Thoughts on Liesel and Death finally meeting?

That is quite the hold your breath moment, isn't it? It's fun to have the scene played over again, after he (Death) mentions it in the beginning, because wow, it means so much more after you've learned who everyone is. And it's powerful that Liesel can recognize Death so well, and how he is stopped in his tracks because of it.

9. If this was your first time reading The Book Thief, is it what you expected? If it was a reread, what did you notice this time around?

I'm amazed at all the stuff I forget during each reading and how when I read it again, I'm like, oh YEAH! This time around I paid attention to the images that were painted, I slowed down and really pictured them in my mind. Amazing. Truly amazing.

10. Will you see the movie?

Of course! But after just finishing this book last night and how sad those scenes are, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to actually WATCH them. I'm going to need lots of Kleenex that's for sure.

Be sure to link up your answers over at Kathy's anytime this week!

Update: Another link to Markus Zusak answering the questions about why so much foreshadowing, and do Liesel and Max get married. It's worth a click over to listen!
