The book club at my house is currently voting on these books for our next year's line up. Which ones do you think are MUST reads for us? Or on the other hand, do you see some that we should totally avoid at all cost?

  3. I hated March, A Fine Balance and The Actor and the Housewife. All for different reasons.
The Angle of Repose is good but challenging. A tough book to get through in a month.
Edenbrooke and Cold Sassy Tree I like and both have worked well in my book club.

  5. I wouldn't read The Actor and the Housewife again with a gun to my head.

    But everything else looks great!

  6. I had a very hard time limiting myself to the five votes.

@Angiegirl - I didn't love THE ACTOR AND THE HOUSEWIFE, but I think it would make for an excellent book club discussion!

  7. The Graveyard Book is soooooooo good! Literally one of my favorite YA books ever. Only other ones I've read are The Forgotten Garden and Brave New World, both books which I'd highly recommend also...

  8. My kids and I didn't finish THE GRAVEYARD BOOK--eh.
    My husband enjoyed STIFF.
EDENBROOK and THE NIGHT CIRCUS are on our book club list for the year.
I very much enjoyed MAJOR PETTIGREW, THE LADIES' AUXILIARY, MARCH, HOTEL ON THE CORNER, AND THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN.
I have copies of A FINE BALANCE and ANGLE OF REPOSE sitting on my shelf--waiting.

  9. I thought Edenbrooke was really cute, but maybe not as discussion-inspiring? I had a hard time with Actor & the Housewife, so I'd just skip it.
I've heard a lot of good things about The Ladies Auxiliary, especially for people who are LDS. I want to read that eventually.

  11. Wow - I'm feeling literately deprived (no pun intended). I've only read March and really liked it. I think it will make for good discussion.

  12. Like Jessica, I had a horrible time voting for only five! I want to read them all! What's with five?

  13. I haven't read most of those!
A Fine Balance is pretty long for a book club, unless you're all super fast or dedicated readers. (I haven't been able to get past chapter 3, but I know it is a favorite of several friends).

  14. Between Shades of Gray ---read that one. I am going to at some point this year. It is sitting on Elliana's bookshelf.

The Actor and the Housewife because you need to read at least one local author and Hale is a great writer.

The Forgotten Garden sounds good and I hear all sorts of great things about Morton's writing.

Brave New World - you need one classic book, I think, and this one sounds the most intriguing.

Edenbrooke --- just read the description and oooo....that is so one that appeals to me right now.

Can I join your book club? Ha. Seriously though, if I lived close I would want to join. Your bookclub always sounds sound fabulous.

  15. I can't wait to hear which ones you end up deciding. I have only read 2 books on the list (The Graveyard Book and The Night Circus), but there are so many on the list that I really want to read!!

  16. I can read The Graveyard Book every year. So good. And The Night Circus was a lot of fun when I read it last year. Both would be good to read and discuss with a group.

I've heard many good things about Kate Morton.

  17. Cold Sassy Tree, my all time favorite until I read "The Noticer" by Andy Andrews which isn't on your list but should be. lol
