The Sunday Salon: Rain Rain!

Welcome to Saturday night (posting Sunday morning though) at It's All About Books! Here's what's happening:

Outside my window: Ah, rain! It's been doing it for three days. Did I tell you I love rain? And people, there's snow on the mountain. And yep, I can see it right outside my very window... well, if it wasn't dark that is.

I am listening to: Mr. Groban, right this very now, blasting directly in my ears. It's working, my mood is being lifted. Interesting how that works!

Song of the week: A 70's flashback! Andy Gibb... anyone? Loved him!

TV Talk: Oh my gosh, I started watching Supernatural. What was I thinking? Wow, that's a perfect show for October. And to watch it while alone at the house? Oh my gosh. Survivor: Go Cochran! Amazing Race: Ethan is off already? What's up with that? Dr. Who: I  love him.  The Vampire Diaries: Oh boy, intense. Terra Nova: It was a Hitchcock Birds remake this last week!

Books I'm reading: Under the Dome by Stephen King
Books I finished: Entwined by Heather Dixon
Books I started: Crossed by Ally Condie, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Books I hope to start soon: Red Glove, Interview with a Vampire, The Iron Daughter
Books I got from the library: Linger, Fire, Avalon High, The Iron Daughter

Other Bookish Business: I don't know if I'm doing the readathon this year. Depends on if we take off for fall break, haul our trailer and go escape somewhere. We'll see. There's tons of stuff going on at the libraries! And tons of local authors having launch parties! Wow, how am I supposed to keep up?? Hey, do you guys get requests to talk about random things on your blog (not book reviews?) Sometimes I get the strangest requests (things not at all book related,) but this week I got one that actually made sense. So I want to link to them, and say check them out if you feel inclined. It's called Gone Reading and they have fun bookish gifts and products and then they donate to libraries in the developing world. I liked that idea. And their stuff looks not bad at all!

Favorite Things of the Week: Getting tweeted by Markus Zusak! But besides that? The rain, a work birthday party, sleeping in today, hauling out the sweatshirts and quilts, going to a music concert with daughter.

Worrying about: The future. My son said, "I think I live too much in the future and not enough in the present." I thought about that, and guess what. I do too. Must stop worrying about things I can't really control. It's going to make me insane.

Plans for the week: I hope to go to a city council meeting and lend my support for a current local hot topic which is the Center for Story. I hope to go to a blogger meet and greet author event at one library, and another day go hear an author lecture at the other library.  Then there's book club on one night, and an orchestra concert and husband's birthday on another night. Then, a week from today I'll be tending the grandparents for the weekend.

Family matters: Add to the above, the both boys plan to go see the Foo Fighters one night. Then one of them is going to up and fly to Arizona for his very own fall break, while the other one plans gig after gig after gig... oh, and makes tons of money selling drinks to the BYU football crowd! Meanwhile, one daughter says "I'm in a relationship" on Facebook, and the other is trying to survive 7th grade.

Recipe of the Week: Rice Krispie Treats! 1/4 cup butter melted with 40 marshmallows, and stirred up with 5 to 6 cups of rice krispies. When was the last time you made them? I'm eating some right now, and I think you better go for it!

Around the house: I plugged in some Airwick thingys, and now it smells around here.

On this date: last year it was the readathon. Dang, why couldn't it have been on this day this year too? It would have been a perfect readathon day around here today! Two years ago I totally explained book blogging... because I know it all! :) Three years ago I did this fun book meme which really gives you a look at what I was reading and thinking about reading back then. Four years ago I posted only nine times in October! Wow, how that's changed, eh? And one of those "posts" was just this lovely picture.

So, there's what's happening... complete with some new-ish sort of categories for this random thought weekly post. I hope you like it.

  1. We have rain in Texas too. It's such a rare event these days that I stayed up until the early hours of the morning just watching it.

  2. First of all, I love the new layout of this post. I was trying to think about some fun things to add but I'm not very creative. :(

The only thing I know about Andy Gibb is that Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake are always making fun of him on Saturday Night Live.

I'm soooo happy you started watching Supernatural, though, you probably shouldn't watch it alone anymore. ;) Vampire Diaries...Ahhh!

    I see you're going to re-read Avalon High...maybe.

You aren't doing the readathon? :( It's my very first time.

    Mmmm, rice krispies.

  3. Ann: Rain watching can be so soothing. I love it.

Jenny: I may change them (these little categories) up every week. We'll see.

Andy Gibb would be easy to make fun of... just watch him dance!

Yes, maybe I'll re-read Avalon High.

Argh, the readathon! I'll just have to see what I end up doing. So much fun though. You are doing it then? Awesome!

  4. Woo hoo! Shake those hips Andy! I think I was in kindergarten when he was big. Was that around the time of Captain and Tenille? I remember getting my hair cut just like hers.

  5. Out of curiosity... when do you think you'll be reading the next Wheel of Time book? Or have they gotten too slow for you?

  6. Shelley: He was late 70's ish. Yeah! Love that dancing! :0

Ari: I'm hoping to read it soon, like November or so. It's not too slow! Not at all! I'm anxious to get back to that crowd! Do you have plans to read it too? Or have you read it already and are a fan?

  7. I really like Supernatural. We started watching it, but I think we only made it up to the third season. I hope we can get back to it at some point.

I am trying to decide right now when I should start Interview with a Vampire... Next week, maybe? Later this week... hm...

  8. I'm rereading the Wheel of Time now, in preparation for the final book. I first read the series in when I was in high school, shortly before Knife of Dreams came out. I'm now a recent college grad, and I haven't read the series straight through in 6 or 7 years (although I've occasionally a few of the books here and there, and I have read each new book when it has come out). I am currently at the beginning of Winter's Heart, going at about a book a month.

I'm always interested in what other people have to say about these books. They seem to provoke very strong reactions, both positive and negative. I love the series for the sheer enormity and intricacy of it, although I recognize its flaws as well. I'm glad you're not finding it slow so far. Sadly, I have a feeling you will in the next few books. Push through it though! Once you get over the hump of books 8-10, it improves a lot.

  9. Kailana: I plan to get going on it this weekend.

Ari: Gah! I don't to hear that they get slow! Anyway, do come back to see how it goes. I hope to get through them before the big final book next year. I think I'll start the Path of Daggers by November... I hope.

  10. I don't want to bias you against them... if you don't think the books have been slowing down already, you might not find that they do at all. In my view, books 5-7 are already much slower than 1-4 (although not as slow as 8-10), so it's a good sign if you don't.
