Suey's Top Tens: Chunky Classics
(where classic means published 50 or more years ago and chunky means more than 500 pages)
1. Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell
2. The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy
3. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
4. Middlemarch by George Eliot
5. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
6. East of Eden by John Steinbeck
7. Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell
8. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein
9. Tess of the D'urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
10. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
I'm with you on a couple of these. I'm a huge fan of both The Lord of the Rings and East of Eden, maybe not so much of Great Expectaions, but then I've always had a hard time with any Dickens that isn't A Christmas Carol. I've got several more gathering dust on Mt. TBR....maybe it's about time to unearth them!
ReplyDeleteI am very anxious to read some of Elizabeth Gaskell's works. Now that you have placed her at the number one spot, I am even more excited :)
ReplyDeleteI probably haven't even read 10 classic chunksters, let alone make a list of the ten best. I'm leery of large books and classics, so put them together and it's a struggle. I worry I won't like it but then feel compelled to finish reading it, and it would take forever.
ReplyDeleteI read the first half of Les Mis on dailylit.com, and the first half of Moby Dick, but never finished either.
Wow. I have only read one of those.
ReplyDelete*hangs head in shame*
Cool place! =)
ReplyDeleteDang I was thinking this would be a review of Sandra Boyton chunky books. I love those!
ReplyDeleteI just need to go buy my own copy of Anna Karenina because I have borrowed it from the library (the same edition, naturally, I wouldn't want to switch translations mid-book) at least three times. Like it, just can't get through it on the library's time frame. Great list!
ReplyDeleteThe grand total of Suey's Favorite Chunksters that I've read: One. But, it was a great one (Great Expectations).
ReplyDeleteGreat list! Gone with the Wind and Tess of the d'Urbervilles are two of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed. I've only read two (Gone with the Wind and Lord of the Rings) but I've been meaning to read many of the other ones on your list.
ReplyDeleteI love your Top 10 lists, by the way.
You are my hero..ine... That doesn't sound the same, does it... Anyways, so many of those books I want to read and still haven't!
ReplyDeleteMegan: Oh, I love Dickens. I'm so anxious to read more one of these days.
ReplyDeleteMolly: Gaskell is one of my all time favorites.
Raidergirl: I love chunky classics!
Britt: So, when are you going to read one? :)
Biblio: Thanks for visiting!
Boy Mom: So sorry! It's been... awhile since I've read those! :)
Brenda: Good idea!
Bookfool: Great Expections IS great! Yep.
Reveiwsbylola and Kim: I love making these lists. Glad you enjoy them.
Kailana: Let me know if you do get one read and what you think.
