Genre: SiFi Adventure
Starring: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and tons more!
Rating: PG13
MY Rating: Two thumbs up
We got to go to this yesterday with my husband's work group as a celebration for a deadline they made... or something. But that was cool! I figured I'd get to it eventually, but not on opening day!
So, as you may (or may not) know, this movie was a sort of mash up of several other movies based on Marvel comic characters. (I'm not Marvel comic savvy, but I'm guessing there are comics of The Avengers? Someone? Yes? So the mash up idea is not a movie industry creation? I'm not sure.) Anyway, in this one, they all come together to save the world from Loki, the bad guy from Thor. Let the special effects, the fights, the explosions and the one-liners begin!!
My random thoughts:
- My favorite parts were for sure the interaction between the heroes themselves. Such funny stuff! How they tried to get along... or not.... and how they played off each others strengths and weaknesses. It was great fun.
- There were plot bits that were a little hard to follow, but I always find this is the case with me and these types of movies. I figure, though, that the story itself isn't really the important part, but it's about the action. Yes?
- I really love Loki! Dang, what is it about him? He's one of those sympathetic villains to me. You know, the ones you feel quite sorry for? The ones you kinda want to help? Anyone else feel this way?
- Usually I notice the music, as you should know by now if you read stuff here, but I didn't notice the music this time. What does that mean? Probably because....
- ......this movie is FULL of crazy awesome action! Lots of fighting, and not just bad guys and heroes, but heroes against heroes.
- I didn't realize The Hulk was so, so, so scary! I never did see this movie, but am very familiar with the old TV show which I loved. Was he that scary then? Can't remember.
- I did find that it was nice to be familiar with all the other movies and to know the back stories of these guys. They referred to that quite a lot.
- And who was that bow and arrow dude? Coolness. Hawkeye I'm told and I've never heard of him. Let's have his movie please!
- One more thing... just a LITTLE romance? Hello.
1. Iron Man (it goes without saying!)
2. Thor (I love how he talks!)3. Captain America (his old fashion-ness is endearing.)
4. Hawkeye (but he may move up once I get to know him!)
5. Black Widow (you go girl!)
6. The Hulk (though I quite enjoyed Dr. Banner)
Did I get them all? Who's your favorite Avenger?
Bottom line: I really enjoyed this movie! It's a blast and funny and crazy and all the good superhero stuff we love.
Have you seen it? What'd you think?
Speaking of superheroes... I'm really quite excited about the new Spiderman... and I know I know... the others are still quite recent but still, I can't help it. It looks awesome. And then there's Batman coming up and he's my favorite one of all. Yay for the summer superhero movies!
Trailer for The Avengers:
I want to see this film just for the interactions between the characters. I've seen all the original movies except for Iron Man 2. Is it important to see the film to understand the plot ?
ReplyDeleteJess, books and sensibility
Jess: No, I don't think Iron Man 2 is important for this plot at all. So no worries.
DeleteOh I'm so glad you liked it! My friend and I went to the midnight showing (we're crazy I know) and we had so much fun! There were several one-liners we were still laughing about all the way home (the scene between Loki and Hulk at the end was THE BEST =P ). And we're both Loki fans, he is soooo gorgeous. Did you see Thor? He's even more lovable there, because he's not quite the evil villain yet - that one is sort of the process of how he becomes what he is in the Avengers, and it makes me so sad, but so in love with him at the same time!
ReplyDeleteAnne: I didn't realize this was a midnight movie craze until I saw the people all in line that night! And I love what you say about Loki. Yes, I totally agree. Yes, I've seen Thor and in fact will probably watch it again today. (My kids rented it and my youngest didn't stay up to see it and wants me to watch with her today.) I look forward to pondering Loki some more. :)
DeleteSounds like an awesome movie! And how exciting that you got to go on opening day! I've never heard of Hawkeye or the Black Widow, but an interested in hearing their stories.
ReplyDeleteThe Hulk wasn't really scary in the old TV show, but think he was a little scarier in the comics. Not a big comic reader, but that was my impression. I mean, isn't he supposed to be sort of the Mr Hyde of Bruce Banner?
Sounds like a must-see movie!
Alexia: I'd say it's a must see IF you are into the comic book superhero stuff. Some people I'm sure will just roll their eyes at it, but they just don't get it.
DeleteI'm taking my boys to see it tomorrow afternoon - can't wait!
ReplyDeleteCarrie: And so? What did you think?
Deletejust saw this film. Joss Whedon really rescued the franchise. It had his sense of humor and character. He even had me liking the Hulk and the Hulk is usually a big fail for me. As for Loki, I like the character, and well, I like to look at him, too... This really sets up Jeremy Renner, though familiar from Hurt Locker and other things, as Hawkeye he is primed for the coming release of the Bourne Legacy.
ReplyDeleteThis was a fun film to see in the theater, not just the action (which wow! love the fighting sequences) but for the humor and the energy in the audience. We had a lot of laughter and cheering.
~L (omphaloskepsis)
L: yes, the Hulk was fun, but still not my favorite either. Yes, the audience was fun. We did, however, have a couple of over enthusiastic mentally handicapped adults... they were a little over the top. Oh, well.
DeleteThis one just doesn't look all that amazing to me but I'm sure I'll go see it at some point. YES! I love Loki and I hate him being the "bad" guy. :(
ReplyDeleteJenny: The more I think about Loki, the more I'm liking him. Sheesh. I always do that!
DeleteThis is showing in 3-D at the IMAX here - doesn't that almost seem like overkill? You do have to feel sorry for Loki - after all, his real dad was a terrible person, no one told him he was adopted until he was an adult, his brother was a screw off but everyone seemed to prefer him anyway. I mean, a guy's bound to get a bit of a chip on his shoulder. And he did save this adopted dad by killing his real dad in "Thor" so that's another point in his favor.
ReplyDeleteLisa: No! 3D and IMAX I love! :) I saw it "normal" though. Love your analysis of Loki!
DeleteI have to see it soon! I saw Thor last year (my friend still talks about my sighs over Thor....), and I enjoyed Iron Man so much. Two of them in the same movie! Plus Loki! Yowsers. I'm not so sure about all the fighting, it does get boring. I'd rather we got lots of snappy dialogue. That would be cool, more dialogue than hits, wouldn't it? Your review was fun,and I will see this at some point. Thor! :-)
ReplyDeleteSusan: Yep, it's true... getting them all together is pretty crazy. There is snappy dialogue (esp. Iron Man of course) but mostly fighting.
DeleteI haven't seen this one, but I'm not really into the comic book hero stuff - my husband and the young 'un do plan on going to see it though. Do you think it's appropriate for say early teens?
ReplyDeleteTanya: Yes, early teens will love this and there's nothing inappropriate. Just the comic book fighting.
DeleteCorey and I were going to go see it over the weekend, but we were both sick. :( I'm glad you enjoyed it. I can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteJenni: I hope you get to go soon!
DeleteI have been hearing a lot of good things about this movie. I will have to check it out at some point.
ReplyDeleteI saved this post until I'd finally seen the movie (which I did last night). I completely agree about Loki, he's such a fantastic villain! My favorite parts were the interactions between the heroes as well. I think the film was really well cast and I'm glad they didn't try and retell everyone's story. People got their own movies and then they went into this one with an established back story. So good!
