A Bit of Me(Me): Other Hobbies

This week's question over at There's a Book for her fun meme is:

Do you have any hobbies (not necessarily talents) besides reading?

I love the (not necessarily talents) disclaimer! Yep, I have many many hobbies, but truly not many talents, so I'm willing to list them for you if you promise to keep that mind!

Music: I love it. I find it creeping into my supposedly "all about books" blog quite often these days. I feel a strong need to talk and share music. I'm old, but I still feel young with regard to music. I think that's a good thing. Some of this is manifested also by my intense desire to go to concerts of all genres. I really really love them. Is this a hobby? Yes, I think so, and a very expensive one!  If you are a regular reader, you'll know that my biggest music obsession is all things Josh Groban. And so guess what I must share right now? He has a new single as part of his promotion for a new album! And you can download it for free! And I get points (for what, I don't know) if you use this link to do it!!! So what are you waiting for? Just do it already.

TV: Once upon a time I thought TV was a bad thing. Yes, many people still think this. But a few years ago, I decided life is too short to stress about feeling guilty about watching some TV. So, I embraced the temptation and my life has NOT suffered in the least! Many people also think that you can only do one or the other, read or watch TV. This, I do no get. Seriously, you CAN do both! Anyway, I think it's a very fun past time. Some of my current favorites, if you don't already know, are Amazing Race, Survivor, Chuck, American Idol, Vampire Diaries and Friday Night Lights. Some past favorites include: Lost, Heroes, Early Edition, Moonlight, Pushing Daisies, Star Trek Voyager, etc. Our recent hobby (discovery) as you DO probably know is having marathon TV viewing days and watching old series that we missed, like Prison Break, Robin Hood, Gilmore Girls, Firefly, and so on. What a blast of a way to watch TV!! I highly recommend it, but save it for a time when you don't have too many other pressing life issues.

Quilting: Before blogging there was quilting. Yes, this hobby has suffered in a big big way the last few years. But I still long to go back to it. I dream of it all the time. I yearn to play with fabric! I want to create. Maybe I can get back into this one of these days! (Here's a picture of a couple I made for babies. I think before it was over, I made about 10 versions of this baby quilt.)

Scrapbooking: as in slapping together some pictures on a page, NOT as in creating major masterpieces. I like to preserve memories, but I don't do the cutsy stuff. No patience (or talent) for that. But I do take a lot of pictures and I do print many of them and then actually put them in a book so they can be looked at. Is that a hobby? Sort of perhaps.

Other bookish hobbies: For years, I've volunteered as the book fair chairperson for the elementary school. Since my youngest is now in 6th grade, this will be my last year at that. I think I'm ready to be done though, so that's good. But, it's been fun. Also, I have a book club that completely enjoy being in charge of. And then there's the library, where I go and work for 12 hours a week. It's more like a hobby than a job, really. How cool is that? Oh, and then there's the local author stalking that's very fun, showing up wherever they are appearing. Yes, it's a hobby of sorts!

So, if I'm not reading or blogging or doing mom duties, I'm probably doing one of the above things! Or at least thinking about doing them!

What things do you like to do when you aren't reading or blogging?

  1. I love watching TV, too, and definitely know that you can read AND do the marathon watching.

My guilty secret is SOAPS! I even have a blog in which I post stuff about them....

My idea of scrapbooking is photos nowadays...and when I was a kid, I wrote little stories next to pictures I cut out for the scrapbook.

But what I wrote about today is here:

  2. I absolutely don't get the whole, "I can't watch TV and read" thing. It always baffles me, but then again I'm also a night owl and stay up quite late reading. Maybe they don't like late nights reading just so they can squeeze it all in? And oh how I loved Moonlight! I was so sad they took it off the air, especially since I think it could have done really well in the season following with all the vampire hype.

Quilting is actually one I forgot to add to my list as well, but that may be because I haven't done much of it recently though I love doing it.

    Great list!

  3. Actually I think quilting is a talent. Sewing of any kind is in my book. My mother tried to teach me, but alas I never got the hang of it and she was such a task master that I ended up hating it in the end.

  4. My TV watching is mostly on DVD way after the show has actually been on and we end up doing mini-marathons like you. I watched (but am not done with) Heroes, Smallville and Gilmore Girls and Monk. Man, I loved the first season of Heroes!! The only show I watch that's current is Lie To Me. I love that show! I used to watch The Office (after catching up on DVD the first three seasons) but now it doesn't make me laugh anymore :-(. I'll have to try out some of your favorites!

  5. Ah, TV. I've pretty much give it up. But, every once in a while, a show will come on that I'll be obsessed with and I'll religiously watch it every week until I've seen every episode. Probably a good thing I don't watch too much :)

Author stalking should be a sport.

  6. I like your hobbies. You are my kind of person. Although, I don't watch much tv beyond NickJr, nickelodeon. I do like watching movies, but even that goes in spurts because of the 4 and 7 year old...gotta watch what is on the tube. Not strict about it but they certainly don't need to see kill 'em up stuff, nor any heavy petting kind of scenes. ;) I do contradict myself though because I will let the 7 year old watch Transformers...the movie. He loves the action, Bumblebee, and so do I. :)

Scrapbooking....love that, but it has greatly suffered in the last 5 years or so. I really need to get back to it.

Quilting....none of that for me, but I do admire the work.

Music...well, do I need to tell you that I have a love for music too? I think not. ;) Concert going...yeah, I hear you on that one. Expensive, it certainly is. Matter of fact, this morning while driving to work it dawned on me that Oct 6th is right around the corner and that means, my blogging friend....MUSE!!!!!!! :D :D

  7. Laurel-Rain: Ah, soaps. I used to be very addicted to Days of our Lives, but somehow I managed to wean myself from it!

    Mr. Lonely: Hmmmm....

1stdaughter: Oh Moonlight. I loved it! Did you know what's his name is now going to be in the new Hawaii five-o? YES! I think I will try it.

Jan: Yes, a talent maybe, but still, not one I'm very good at. The mistakes I make would cause a "real" quilter to shudder in pain.

Shelley: My kids watched Smallville DVDs, but I didn't get into it. And I don't think they ever finished. We have Monk the first season to watch sometime too. Yeah, I really love doing the DVD thing. I should try the first seasons of The Office too!

Melissa: I gone in TV spurts, and for the last few years, it seems to be on the upswing. I agree about the author stalking thing. We are to the point now that my husband is embarrassed to say to some of the authors. The stalking thing is now pretty obvious. I tell him, ah, but they love it!

Ibeeeg: So not FAIR that you get to go to Muse again! Oh, how fun! I will be thinking about you and I want a full report!

  8. Oooh, oooh! A book fair chairperson! Sounds like love! The school where I teach actually does not do a book fair because of the lack of profits made.. :( I can't wait to get a library job so I can have book fairs!

  9. I love scrapbooking as well (the productive kind - not the creative kind). I haven't made the time to do it lately, but I MUST start on my daughter's Open House album if I plan to have it completed by May :)

  10. I always want to laugh when people say that they can't read and watch TV at the same time. On the other hand, I have to give it to them for their ability to focus and be so entranced by TV shows. I would be bored off of my bum!

My sewing has totally taken a backseat to reading and quilting? Forget about it! I will get to stitching up some new curtains as soon as my TBR pile is a bit lower.
