A Bit of Me(Me): My Favorite Famous Person

It's Saturday! BBAW is over, which means we are back to our regularly scheduled programming. And on Saturday that means,  A Bit of Me(Me) from over at There's a Book.

Today's question:

Who is a famous person
 (dead or alive)
that you most admire and why?

I had to ponder a bit. Then I was going to give up, as I usually do, and make a nice list. But then I thought of a person I feel very good about, and I'm going to leave it at one answer for a change! So who is the famous person I admire?

1880-1968

And I think the why is fairly obvious. The things she overcame to be a totally contributing member of society are incredible. Her story is amazing as we all know. Have you read her book, The Story of My Life? If not, I highly recommend it. (Here's my very mini review.) Fascinating to know what was going on in her head during those moments we know from The Miracle Worker. And then all the things she had to deal with from there. It was published in 1904 when she was only 22. Think of all the things she did after that!  Her perseverance is impressive and something we should all take to heart.

Here's a few cool quotes of hers I've just stumbled on:

Literature is my Utopia. Here I am not disenfranchised. No barrier of the senses shuts me out from the sweet, gracious discourses of my book friends. They talk to me without embarrassment or awkwardness.

Never bend your head. Hold it high. Look the world straight in the eye.

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt within the heart.

Who do you most admire?

  2. There's a children's biography of Helen Keller I used to read over and over when I was young. Such an inspiring life!

I'm proud of you for picking one person - I know how hard it can be to pick just one person, or book to answer a question.

  4. I was just telling my boys about Helen Keller earlier this week.

My hero is George Washington Carver. He was brilliant, humble, determined, generous, kind, and an all around amazing human being.

  6. Helen Keller really inspired me when I was a child and into reading biographies. The fact that she triumphed against such great odds is amazing!

  7. Such a great choice! This really was a tough question for me as well, who picked it?? LOL.

No, I truly love Helen Keller. Her life was so inspirational and her story was so raw. We actually have a quote of hers hanging in my home. It says,
"So much has been given to me that I have no time to ponder that which has been denied."

I love that quote. To think that she felt she'd been given so much. It makes me ponder on my own blessings and life, and helps me be more grateful.

    Excellent choice!
