Beehive Award: 2011 Nominees

Every summer the teen summer reading program at our library kicks off the summer by promoting the books that are nominated for the Beehive Award, an award sponsored by the Children's Literature Association of Utah. The library encourages the kids to read these books and then vote (on a ballet they provide and can turn in when they return the book) on whether or not they liked the book. It's really quite and fun, and the list is quite consistently comprised of some pretty cool books.

Here's what's been nominated for the 2011 YA Award:

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen
Brooklyn Nine by Alan Gratz
The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams
Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Compound by S.A.Bodeen
The Devil's Paintbox by Victoria McKernan
Eon: Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman
Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith
Musician's Daughter by Susanne Dunlap
My Fair Godmother by Janette Rallison
Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George
Project Sweet Life by Brent Hartinger

Have you read any? What did you think?

  2. Compound will be one of this year book battle reads for the Area Wide Battle I co-founded and hosted by my middle school. It was a very good book with some interesting ideas about survival and family. Chains is also on the list. Those are the only two I have read from this list.

  6. I've read 3 of the books on the list: MY FAIR GODMOTHER, THE COMPOUND and CHOSEN. I loved both GODMOTHER and CHOSEN, although I think CHOSEN is the more award-worthy of the two. I wasn't impressed with COMPOUND's execution, even though I really liked the premise. I'll be interested to see which book wins!

  9. I've read 3 of them and love each one: The Chosen One, My Fair Godmother, and Princess of the Midnight Ball. All excellent.

Godmother was a Whitney award finalist for Best YA, and The Chosen One took the award.

  11. That's cool the library does that. My YA is in the poetry category (FAR FROM YOU) and I'm afraid no one will read and vote for it because it's nominated there with a bunch of poetry books for young kids. :) Mine is a novel written in verse, so it's not a poetry book per se. Oh well, it's very nice to be nominated - I'm honored!!!

  12. I work in a High School Library and have found The Chosen One and Compound to be the most popular with the students. I really did like them both as well. Princess of the Midnight Ball, Eon and Along for the ride are right up there in popularity as well. I need to read the rest of them so I can booktalk them as well. We do vote on the books here at the high school. As last years winner says : Let the games begin!
