Book: Everything Is Fine by Ann Dee Ellis

This is small, very easily read book. It's all written in sort of a poetry way, very short simply sentences, and all in a bit of a stream of consciousness way, letting you into the thoughts of Mazzy, a 12 year old girl.
Mazzy is having a hard time. Her mom won't get out of bed, her dad is away on a never ending business trip and her neighbors keep bugging her. But everything is fine. She thinks. She will be fine. Her mom is fine. Her dad is fine.
But as we all know, things really are NOT fine. And this is the story of how she deals with the situation this particular summer and how maybe things will be fine in the end... maybe.
What a wonderful book! Sad, poignant, funny, and deeply moving. Mazzy has a perfect voice, and one that seemed more true to a girl her age then many books I read. Actually, sometimes she seemed even younger than she really was. I loved hearing her thoughts though. She's one of my favorite characters I've met lately.
Bottom line: I loved it!
Ann Dee Ellis was at the Authorpalooza event I went to a few weeks ago, but her table was one that I skipped. Sad. Next time! :)

ReplyDeleteI was really upset when this and Carol Lynch William's "The Chosen One" were passed over during the major awards this year. I thought it deserved Printz Honor.
