Top Ten Favorite Kdramas from 2021

It's time again to report on the kdrama watching for the past year. Because I know you are all dying for it! (Actually, I think some of you are coming round to this being a thing... even for "normal" people!)

Here's my drama watching by the numbers:

Total dramas watched in 2021: 19

Aired in 2021: 13
Aired previous to 2021: 6

Five hearts: 5
Four hearts: 9
Three hearts: 4
Two hearts: 1
Ahn Hyoseop
(actor in Lovers of the Red Sky)

New-to-me actors to love:

Kang Song
Park Jihoon
Yim Siwan
Kang Taeoh
Choi Taejoon
Ahn Hyoseop
Jang Kiyong
Hwang Inyeop

Favorite dramas I watched from 2021:

True Beauty

Well, and so... much happens. There is A LOT in this drama about bullying. It's upsetting to watch at times. But mostly this is a lighthearted one with so many laugh out loud moments. So many. And as usual played brilliantly by all the leads. And rips your heart out with the second male lead syndrome for sure. Anyway, a very heartwarming drama with great messages about how we treat each other and deal with hard things. Watch it!

My Roommate is a Gumiho

AH.. it sounds so silly in the summary of it.. .but it's so dang cute!! He's so... so.... completely... serious and sober and she is so fun and happy go lucky... and he is stricken with that! And soon, she also becomes taken with him. It's an absolutely lovely romance. Well, of course, all sorts of things get in the way of them figuring this all out and how he needs to become human and all. But of course, they must figure out a way! Sigh. It's seriously the best.

Hometown Cha Cha Cha

This a great small town feel good drama. It reminds me a lot of Gilmore Girls... the town feel anyway... and the fun banter.

Lovers of the Red Sky

And thus begins a beautiful love story, with the backdrop of this curse and the fact that she is the solution to breaking it, even if it will be her death to do so. So good guys. SO GOOD! Beautiful all the way around. Music. Story. Acting. Cinematography. Everything.

Doom at Your Service

And at the end of this crappy day, she is angry and upset as is expected and she yells into the void... "I wish doom upon this WHOLE WORLD!"

Well, little did she know that Doom himself heard the call. And before she knows it, he is knocking at her door and when she opens it, he says with that perfect classic Seo In Guk smile... "Hi. Doom.. at your service."

Yep...that's how it starts!

Start Up

I really enjoyed the romantic cuteness of this one, and the heart wrenching love triangle. The business aspects of this one... of which there are a lot... bogged me down sometimes, but mostly that was interesting too.

But, mostly, Nam Joo Hyuk is just a joy to watch. He played the awkward nerdy computer dude SO WELL! Wow...the best. And he's is just so adorable and fun.. and then when he gets confidence as the story goes along, he does that just as well too. So good.

Happiness

Once they get settled in their new apartment... the virus breaks out there and they are put on a lockdown. So the story is basically them dealing with this and dealing with the crazy people who live in the building. It's fantastic. Not a lot of romance in this one, though they do have moments...but it's more a character driven, people study. With a side of zombies. Really good.

So I Married My Anti-fan

The premise is we have our guy who is a top kpop star, and our girl, who is a reporter and they get in a clash when she sees something she isn't supposed to and it makes him crazy. Their conflict is captured and now it's a big news story. His people think it would make a  great publicity stunt, and so they come up with the idea to make a reality show pairing them together. They can't stand each other and this sounds painful to them, but both of them are talked into it.

And so the show (within the show) begins. And also the romance. Which is very lovely! And suddenly we see that this dude who seemed gruff and unapproachable at first, is actually really sweet and nice. Of course he is!

Favorite dramas I watched that aired before 2021:

100 Days My Prince

Our crown prince is played by D.O. from EXO and he is the main reason everyone should watch this drama. His acting is spot on. He's fantastic! (How many times do you think I can say fantastic and SO GOOD in one review? A lot apparently.) Our girl is great too and a favorite from another drama I loved called Shopping King Louis.

This trailer makes it looks pretty silly and funny, which it is, but there are plenty of serious and dramatic moments too for sure

Hello Monster

Now it's years later, and suddenly our guy is getting the vibe that maybe his brother is still out there somewhere. And yeah. Of course he is. Meanwhile, he ends up helping a fabulous team of cops who investigate murders, and falls for the girl on that team. Only, he is very aloof about it of course. (Ah, I wanted more swoony Seo InGuk romance moments, but this drama is not about that I guess...)

Instead, it's about this brother relationship, and once everything gets figured out.. .it's as I said, heart wrenching!

Another great year of drama watching! And now I'm about to finish my first one of 2022 and yep. I LOVED IT!

"Old" Blogger Shout Out! #BookBloggerSupport22

The task for the Support Book Bloggers Challenge this month is:

FIND 10 BOOK BLOGGERS YOU’VE ENJOYED READING IN THE PAST AND GIVE THEM A SHOUT OUT

I mentioned Susan (from Bloggin' 'bout Books) when I first posted my plan to do this challenge... one of my all time favorite bloggers and someone I've even met IRL, even if it has been YEARS since that happened! She is so inspiring to me with how much she reads and all the smart reviews she posts. Amazing.

So who else have I followed these many years?

Jenni Elyse of course! She is the one who has especially been encouraging me to keep this blog going despite my wariness that I have any sustainability here. Thank you! She is just generally inspiring in her tenacity to push through some really rough life issues and I am here to cheer her on with that!

Kami from Kami's Library Thoughts also recently started to get her blog up and running again. She is the one who reads more books than anyone else I know. Crazy cool! And have I said lately that I am still just a bit excited they she is willing to give kdramas a chance these days. Oh my word....

Tif from Tif Talks Books is one of my favorite bloggers from over the years. We've had a connection with the desire to do the writing thing and I need to re-connect with her to see how that's going!

Ang from Eastern Sunset Reads is another long time blogging buddy. Looks like she is still at it too. And oh, I remember that she also reads A TON of books!

Serena at Savy Verse and Wit... my poetic blogging buddy! From so so many years back! Wow, this is like a trip down memory lane! I feel like it was all from another life for sure. Serena is always hyping up poetry and writing poetry and I love it!

Lisa at Lit and Life is another blogger I've loved reading over the years. And it looks like she has kept it up. Way to go! I will be reconnecting here for sure.

Another favorite blogger over the years has been Angie from Angieville. Looks like she is still around, but not posting a lot. I hope all is well with her! We had such fun back in the day!

Jeane from Dogear Diary is one of the bloggers that has still commented on my random posts over the past few years of struggling! Thank you for that Jeane! And I'm realizing for some reason you aren't in my blogroll which I will fix now! And hopefully that also means I will comment on your stuff more often.

And finally, a very LONG LONG time blogger, Nancy at Bookfoolery! She not only posts about books, but CATS too! In looking at her blog right now I see that she has a blogroll that is much more complete than mine and now I need to go through that to see who else is still out there in the blogging world!

You know what I really miss is Google Reader, right? How to keep track of everyone without that! All the other blog organization ones I've tried just didn't cut it. I have my blogroll on my page, and it's so sad to scroll through that and see how many people haven't blogged in forever. But also fun to see the ones that have hung in there! I feel like I'm struggling with the blogging, but still I am getting a few posts a year! So go me! And go everyone else still hanging in there!

Now next month I need to find some new bloggers!

Top Ten Books of 2021

I rated 3 books a 5 star this past year... and many many books with 4 stars. I picked my favorites from those and have come up with this list of  my top ten books from this past year, listed here with a blurb from my review.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

I really loved the rich detail and beautifully story telling. I really needed romance though... I really thought I was going to get romance! AHHH!!! So other than that, everything else was fabulous!

96 Miles by J.L. Esplin

Wow, but I haven't read a book that gripped me like this one for quite
awhile. It's a survival story that really had me on the edge of my reading seat the whole time, and I devoured it. (Ha devoured... because yet again, this book will make you HUNGRY and THIRSTY both, like... literally!)

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

It's all quite fascinating. And sad. Also inspirational for celebrating the human spirit. I really ended up enjoying it and it was quite eye opening to learn about.

The Black Witch by Laurie Forest

It's a beautifully written fantasy with a fabulous world that's been created to show us how great diversity is. I really quite enjoyed it and plan to continue the series.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

I don't even know how to describe this little book. It's fascinating and trippy and weird. And I totally enjoyed it!

What I Like About You by Marisa Kanter

Anyway, it's all cute and fun and crazy and I loved it. Not that I'm famous online or anything, but I related to so much in this book. Her desire to go to the big book convention (BEA anyone?) and be on a panel of bloggers... the lingo she uses to describe this life. The stress of coming up with posts and waiting for replies and responses. Just simply the love of books and the love of being creative and sharing that with the world. It's awesome.

My Life as  Potato by Arianne Costner

I fell in love with this character from the very first page and I love it when that happens. Rooting for him all the way! He's an adorable kid, I know this! LOL. A truly funny story with lots of heart. Awesome.

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

What a great premise for a story that really looks deep into stuff we all have to deal with in life. It was great. This author's writing is fantastic, as most of you know.

A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow

SO MUCH FOOD in this book! I need all the recipes!

The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

I've watched a kdrama with a similar premise so I was interested to see how this book would handle this funny situation! And it was just as delightful as expected. It's very fun and full of lots of British-isms which I loved. We flipped between the POVs of both of these characters and it was fun to see the differences between and yet how they worked so well together.

This is the TWENTIETH year I've kept track of my top ten favorite books of the year! Interested in seeing those lists? Click here and scroll to the bottom....

Kdrama Mini Reviews: September - December

I figured since I did a quick mini-review wrap up of the books I read through the end of 2021, I'd do the same for the kdramas. Let's get caught up and start "fresh" in 2022! (Already behind, but whatever...)

Hometown Cha Cha Cha ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Likely my favorite drama of the year. So cute and fun and sweet. Starring the adorable Kim Seonho whose character in this one is practically perfect. He plays a dude who is beloved in this small seaside village. When our girl comes from the big city to set up a dentist office, she ruffles the feathers of many and he helps smooth things over. He is intrigued by her, but seems be holding back. This a great small town feel good drama. It reminds me a lot of Gilmore Girls... the town feel anyway... and the fun banter.  Click here for the trailer. (This one is on Netflix.)

Squid Game ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Of course we had to get on the bandwagon and see what everyone was talking about. Strange that the "regular" world was freaking out over a KDRAMA! Is this real life??? But I am sad this is the one that caught the world's attention. It's a rough one my friends. VERY rough. But very intriguing and so much to discuss and think about. The ending had me angry, because of course, they left it hanging and there will be a season two. (Not the norm for kdramas.)

It's about a group of people who are so desperate in their real lives for money that they agree to play a set of kid games to win millions of  dollars (aka. billions of won.) It's a battle to the death and it's very ruthless and gut wrenching.

The only actor people I knew in this from before was the cop dude (love him!) and the lady who plays the main character's mom (she's in EVERYTHING, no joke) and of course Gong Yoo, the one that plays the slapping game in the beginning to entice our guy to play the games. He might be the most famous Korean actor out there at the moment. But it's been fun to see these other actors get noticed from this show. The old guy just won a big time award.

Curious if any of you non-kdrama people watched this one. Let me know what you thought!

Link to the trailer here. This one is on Netlfix.

Nevertheless, ❤ ❤

Lots of people were talking about this one and I was curious. Plus I felt drawn by the actor Kang Song. But this is NOT a feel good drama! So much  manipulation and miscommunication and just... shallowness of all characters. Kang Song's character seems sweet up front but is really just a player and he made me crazy. Our girl doesn't seem to have a clue and just is... stupid. LOL. It was like watching a train wreck, this one. And there's a sweet sweet second lead who is so perfect, but OF COURSE the second lead NEVER GETS THE GIRL! Here's the trailer and it is also on Netflix.

Lovers of the Red Sky ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

Oh my word, what a beautiful drama this one was! It's a historical fantasy where our dude has been cursed and sometimes turns into the terrible god of death. He is blind (both the dude and the god) and wants his eyes back (from our girl.) When he is not possessed by the monster, he is a lovely sweet, quiet shy astronomer working at the palace. And our girl has come to live there as the resident artist. When they meet up again, they realize they are childhood sweethearts. But he is confused because back then it was HER that was blind, and not him.

And thus begins a beautiful love story, with the backdrop of this curse and the fact that she is the solution to breaking it, even if it will be her death to do so.

So good guys. SO GOOD! Beautiful all the way around. Music. Story. Acting. Cinematography. Everything. Here's a trailer for this one. It's on Viki.

Dali and Cocky Prince ❤ ❤ ❤

I watched this one simply to see Kim Minjae in a fun romcom. The last one he was in his character was so sober and aloof. But this one... totally the opposite and I LOVE LOVED LOVED seeing him in this kind of role. So funny. He's a lowborn dude who has made his way in the world by sheer grit, while she has inherited it all through her families art gallery. When the art gallery goes bankrupt, she ends up owing him money. And he is very snotty (cocky, yes?) about it, but then, he realizes there is much more to her and to the story than he ever imagined. And here's the trailer for this one. It's on Viki.

Wild Idol ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

While not considered a kdrama, I'm listing it here anyway because I watched it on my kdrama streaming thing and because it was on Korean TV so... it works for me.

This was an idol reality survival show where 45 guys competed to be in a kpop band. They quickly narrowed it down to 16 guys and then we proceeded to fall in love with all them as we watched them compete in several missions. Some physical, some musical, some visual... all while "out in the wild."  They were all amazing and so talented. The final episode was live on a stage and it was awesome to see how well they all cleaned up. They were narrowed down to 7 guys who now make up a band called T.A.N who will be debuting soon. So excited for them. Most of them had been in other groups that were struggling, and so they are desperate for their big break. Seriously though, if you love music competition shows, try this one for something really fun and different. I can't find a trailer, but here's the music video all 45 did before they started to be eliminated. This one is on Viki.

Happiness ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

My draw to this one was again, the actor, Park Hyungsik, who has just come back from his military service. Love him in everything he's done so far, so I figured this one would be no exception. He plays a cop who ends up in a marriage of convenience with his long time friend... they had to get married in order to qualify for the housing she wanted so bad. In the meantime, a virus has broken out and this virus causes people to go crazy and bite other people. Yes... zombies. Here's the trailer. It's on Viki.

Lots of great shows this past year! My addiction continues! Can't wait to see what this next year brings! I am so behind and trying catch up on them all, plus keep up with the new ones. It's pretty impossible, but fun to try!

While we are on the subject of kdramas, maybe you'd be interested in the compilation I did of all my favorite OSTs (songs from kdramas) from the year. You might recognize some of these ones being featured! (But some of the ones featured I haven't even seen yet!! AH!)

MINI BOOK REVIEWS! September 2021 to December 2021

So... to catch up... I'm just going to list the books I haven't fully "reviewed" yet (from 2021) with a little mini thought, and then have a fresh start for the year.

Sunkissed by Kasie West:
Fun, musically-themed story that includes a summer camp romance with a hot, long haired, sensitive guitar player. All while managing to fulfill one's own dreams. Cute and fun summer romance, and just what I'd expect from Kasie West. She remains one of my all time favorite comfort authors. Love her stuff so much!

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman:
We read this one for book club and while I enjoyed the first page immensely (I have never related to something SO MUCH!) I was soon feeling...um.. anxious about the story. The character made me crazy, the premise made me crazy. But my buddies said... DO NOT QUIT... so I didn't and they were right. All these things redeemed themselves and everything made sense in the end. And the characters ended up being lovely and perfectly relatable. What a great premise for a story that really looks deep into stuff we all have to deal with in life. It was great. This author's writing is fantastic, as most of you know.

Not Playing Fair by Terri Osburn:
By an author friend of mine.. and I got to read this advanced copy. Fun romance about a baseball playing librarian heroine who is getting over being dumped when a new dude shows up to play ball.  She also has issues with her mom who she hasn't talked to for years when suddenly a letter from her shows up in the mail. Oh dear! Totally fun and fluff read!

Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez:
By a local author who, with this very book, was featured on Reese Witherspoon's Book Club! It's about a girl who's dream is to play soccer, but her family thinks it's crazy for her. She is out to prove them wrong!

You Have a Match by Emma Lord:
This one is about what happens if you take a DNA test and get a surprise. Our girl realizes she is a perfect match to be sisters with someone who lives in her town, but has never met. So they meet up and decide what they will do from there. Confront their parents? Become friends? Or not? This one features summer camp experiences too, just like the book above.

A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow by Laura Taylor Namey:
I really loved this one (fantastic writing!) about a Cuban girl from Miami who is struggling with lots of things that have gone wrong in her life, so her family ships her off to spend the summer with her aunt in London. And how she finds herself there despite her best efforts to continue to hate life. SO MUCH FOOD in this book! I need all the recipes! (As if I could 1. actually make them and 2. actually eat them. Sigh.)

And those are all the books I read starting from when I last posted a review through the end of 2021. Not a whole lot I know, but I'm at least still reading!

Book Review: A Million Beginnings by Sabrina T. Rudolph

Book: A Million Beginnings by Sabrina T. Rudolph

Genre: Romance

Rating: ★ ★ ★

I first heard about this book several months ago when I saw a tweet that looked like it was promoting a new kpop band. I was all... WHAT? WHO IS THIS? And Sabrina answered me to explain that it was the band she and her friends (and sister I think?) were creating as part of a new kpop romance book series.

So from there I followed this band (because yes they have their own twitter! @Millions_ivp) and the company created by these guys to promote the book and series. It's been fun to watch! And I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy and can tell you about it here and now!

(I did a little video shout out about this here if you are interested.)

This story introduces us to the kpop band Millions, who are coming back after taking a two year long  break (forever in kpop land.) Their previous company treated them like crap and so they have decided to start their own company and promote themselves. We join Seohee as she is approaching this new company to interview for a position there.

They end up hiring her as their manager (not exactly what she wanted, but she figures it will get her foot in the door) and she starts helping them get ready for their comeback and working on their promotions.

In the meantime she is learning all about the members, which of course we get to do as readers also. So  much fun. The book flips back and forth from the points of view of Seohee and one of the members, Taejun. And each one of the other members has a turn or two with their viewpoints also. The chapters are divided into "tracks" instead of chapters, all named after a kpop song. So awesome.

Taejun is especially flirty, and especially with Seohee. She blows him off for a long long time, assuming that's just how he is, but deep down she is loving it and eating it up. And soon he is getting hard to resist. Meanwhile Taejun is flirting in earnest, and not just for fun. But he knows it's going to be hard to change her mind and convince her to be more than friends because she is so determined to keep things professional.

And so it goes! The romance of these two, with the backdrop of a group trying to start over again and deal with the painful and sad backstories that they all bring to the table. It feels like a very authentic look into what it might be like behind the scenes. And this is why I think we kpop fans love these stories so much (well, and the romance of course!) because it's really interesting to imagine what it's like for these guys in their real lives.

I totally enjoyed this story and loved falling in love with yet another band, even if it is fictional!

Sabrina and her friends are funding this whole endeavor themselves, so if you are interested in this book and helping them out, check out their Kickstarter site here where you can also learn a TON more about this book and their project.

In the meantime, I will be looking forward to the next installment to see who conquers their demons and gets to fall in love next!

Demigod Magic Academy 1: Daughter of Zeus by Jennie Bennett on Kindle Vella

Has anyone every tried Kindle Vella? Or even know what it is? I'm guessing it's a place on Amazon where authors  post a bit of their story at a time, like in the old days. And you get hooked with some free bits and then you have to pay to get the rest? Yes?

Anyway, I thought I'd try it with this book by an author I sort of know, Jennie Bennett, whose books I've read some of and quite enjoyed.  So, I've read one chapter with this Kindle Vella thing and am already intrigued.

If you are interested, here is the link:

Demigod Magic Academy 1: Daughter of Zeus

And if you have experience with this platform, let me know how it works for sure! What can I expect? As an aspiring author, is it something I should be looking into and learning more about?

Supporting Book Bloggers

 #BookBloggerSupport22

Just when I was moaning about connecting with bloggers again, Susan from Bloggin' 'bout Books posts about this fun challenge hosted by Pages Unbound Reviews. So it appears I really need to put my money... aka. time... where my mouth is and join in and find bloggers again! Right?

I'll write a post each month to report my success or failure. (I may cross over to some of my other places while I'm at it too, we'll see how it goes.)

Anyway, let this be a declaration of my intention to try this!

And first up on the list is this task:

1. FIND 10 BOOK BLOGGERS YOU’VE ENJOYED READING IN THE PAST AND GIVE THEM A SHOUT OUT

The shout out can be as a blog post on your blog, a list on Twitter, or any other ways you want to show them support.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I've Recently Added to My Collection

So... in an effort to reconnect with the blogging world and attempt to keep this thing going, how about I give the Top Ten Tuesday thing a try again. Wow, it feels like a blast from the past to even say that!

This week's topic:

Top Ten Most Recent Additions to My Book Collection

I was realizing that we didn't get many books for Christmas this year. But each of us (there's three in the household at the moment) got one.. and they were all memoirs. Interesting.

My husband loves Julie Andrews, so it only made sense that he ended up with this book. I think he's actually even started it! I wonder how it's going. Once he's done, I plan to see what I think. I'm sure it will be quite interesting.

My son gave me this book, not that I'm a huge Will Smith fan, but he thought it looked interesting and figured I'd think the same. I do like Will Smith and I'm sure he has a fascinating story, so I look forward to getting into this one at some point.

My daughter got this one because I'd heard a lot of great things about it and it's on a topic that we all find fascinating around here. I for sure plan to read this one soon too.

Before that I can't remember what new books we've acquired! So this will be a top three today! Way to start me re-entry into the community! LOL!

Have you read any of these? Were they awesome? Do you recommend?

If you want to participate in Top Ten Tuesday, be sure to head over to ThatArtsyReaderGirl's blog and join the fun!

To Blog or Not to Blog

It's quite apparent that I'm struggling keeping up on the blogging lately. For years now I've wondered about trying to keep going. I'm not very motivated to hang out here these days, the connection isn't here anymore. I feel like a party started somewhere else and I wasn't invited. So I'm not sure if I need to just move on, or figure out what the new thing is.

But when I imagine quitting, I feel like I'd be so lost without it! It's been part of  my life for so long... like... I really truly don't think I could actually do it!

And thus the conundrum as they.

In my fantasy world, this is what I would hope for regarding blogs and writing:

  • keep reviewing books and dramas here, and at the same time figure out how to reconnect with the blog blogging world (and kdrama world for that matter.) Whether that's here or Instagram or MDL or where ever. (TikTok? Please say it isn't so!)
  • start actually blogging on my kpop site...another place no one goes! But that thought makes me feel so very snarky about all the stuff I could go on about without fear! LOL!
  • spend most of my writing time actually writing books... finish the ones I've started and find a way to share them, and find a place to share that journey, whether it's here or an actual author site (something I created once upon a time, but has since lapsed)
Can I keep up on THREE blogs?

Highly unlikely. But we know that everyone likes their categories separated out! Even though for a me good mash up of kpop/kdrama, books and writing sounds quite heavenly.

Then add the YouTubing (another place I struggle with what to do or not to do) and then you have a glimpse into my crazy mind.

Anyway. That's my wish and dream. Stuff I think about at night.

So... what to do?
