Movie Review: Mockingjay Part 2

Movie: Mockingjay Part 2
Genre: Drama Dystopian
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth
Rating: PG13
My Rating: two thumbs up

Yes, this movie picks up right at the moment the first one ends, which is after Peeta is rescured from the Capitol and trying to recover from what happened there. He has been conditioned to kill Katniss, and has just tried to choke her to death.  So the movie starts, Katniss is hurt but okay and Peeta looks terrible.
A key scene that will make you weepy.

They end up sneaking into the Capitol to try and get Katniss to the President so she can kill him. Both Peeta and Gale are with her, and also Fennick. They have to run through a bunch of booby traps and it's intense and insane. Then when she gets almost there, she sees Prim just about at the same time some bombs are dropped and bam.

I think you all know the rest, yes?

It's a sad movie. Depressing. Just like the book. Even thought things wrap up and end somewhat happy. But that being said, they do a great job, just as they do in all the other movies, of getting it right and true to the book.
I can't help but love Gale.

So, I liked it. The movie was great. But the story itself still depresses me what with all the people that die and the way that Gale is treated, which just kills me. (Jenny and I are thinking of a Book Banter on this so I'll go into it more then.) And anyway, I feel mixed about it since I have a hard time separating movie from story. Know what I mean?

Oh, my favorite moment? At the end, a little thing between Haymitch and Effie. Watch for it!

But seriously, it's the weirdest thing to me is that this whole Hunger Games journey is over! All the books and now all the movies! I've been there for them all! And it's over! So sad!

Bottom Line: Of course see it. SEE IT PEOPLE! Embrace the emotion!

  1. I enjoyed the films well enough. Still think the second is the best of them all. I had not read the books, and so the comment I made to my wife and her cousin after seeing this one was that I felt I was hurt by that because I never felt the films on their own did a good job of giving viewers any reason to feel emotionally connected to Gale or Peeta. I don't think the actors did a particularly good job, but they weren't given a lot of depth in the films to work with either. The focus is, understandably, Katniss and by the end I didn't feel there was any reason for her to "pick" either of them because she was a strong character on her own but didn't do enough (in the films) to make either of them seem like anything but an accessory item. I think having the more complex story of the books allow readers to bring that emotional connection in with them. So in that area I think the films were less successful, but overall I enjoyed them and am glad I got to experience them with my wife.

    1. Carl: Interesting to hear your thoughts from someone having not read the books. I do think that those of us who have go in already SO invested in these characters that we don't even notice if their development is on or not. I do know that a lot of people felt like you that she didn't really need to pick one or the other. That being said, a lot of readers would have FREAKED if she wouldn't have!

  3. I just saw this movie today and loved it! I said the same thing right after seeing it ... I can't believe they are all done. I'm going to miss this one, so I'm thinking I need to find my books and have a good re-read. I just adore this story so, so much!

  4. Oh I don't doubt it, lol! I just wish either the writers would have done more to give dimension to those characters and/or the actors were better. Of course, this is just my opinion. I've seen plenty of films that, taken alone, probably didn't have good character development, but because I was bringing my book knowledge to it, I was able to give them that missing dimension. All that being said, I still enjoyed the series.
