Book Review Discussion: The Boyfriend App by Katie Sise

Book: The Boyfriend App by Katie Sise
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance
Rating:★★★☆☆
For: Beehive Awards
From: the library

Short Synopsis: Audrey is a computer nerd at her school. When she hears about an app writing contest, she jumps at the chance to win money for her college fund. Since she's in love with one of her fellow computer nerds, and figures he'll never notice her, she gets the idea to write an app that connects people (ie. find a boyfriend!) with similar interests. She's not sure she will be matched with this guy, but maybe! After she writes the app, her fellow students love it and her status in the school rises. Then she uncovers a secret that changes everything and after that, things get really intense and crazy.

My Response: I was really intrigued with this book because of its title. It could either be really fun or really dumb. Well, and now I must say that I think it was a bit of both! The idea of an app that matches people and attracts people to each other and most especially the psychology behind it, was pretty fun and interesting. But then again, the idea of forcing people to be together, kinda creepy. There was also a lot of digs to our dependence on technology, which was eye opening. But, in the end, I liked it. The romance was cute and it was a quick and easy read.

Bottom Line: Fun and frivolous! And a little bit tech smart too for those that enjoy that sort of thing.

Let's Talk About: Hmmm.... so I saw some reviews on Goodreads that accused this book of going over the top and called it "rapey." Eh? I  mean, I totally didn't see that. I saw a "for fun" app that got out of control and there was sort of lesson to be learned... which in turn gives it its story... but rape? Sometimes I think some readers really go out of their way to find things wrong with books. It makes me crazy. What do you think?

Other Reviews:

it may not be a book for everyone but if you’re looking for something that will make you laugh, make you smile, and help you find yourself rooting for a geeky fun female main character, I think you should absolutely give it a shot! From Good Books and Good Wine

I liked that this wasn't just about the relationships but the coding terminology and how Audrey goes about creating and testing the app was pretty cool. From Little Library Muse

There are so many scenes that can be hilarious and leave me smiling like an idiot at the characters dialogue and actions and then at the same time there are moments where things would get a very serious tone and I would feel whatever Audrey was feeling. From Chapter by Chapter

I mean who wouldn't want to be able to push a button on your phone and get the man of your dreams to want you! From Curling Up With a Good Book

  1. This one's in my TBR - haven't gotten to it yet but it sounds like a cute read, especially with the tech angle.
