A to Z Blogging: On Being a Fan

I feel like I'm a fan of so many things. And sometimes I feel like it's weird to be a big fan of so many things. Or that it's okay for young people, but strange for older people. And why is that I wonder? Why can't older people be all passionate and crazy about something? What's the problem with that I ask you?

What does it mean, anyway, to be a fan? I think the word  comes form the word fanatic which according to the internet dictionary is: a person whose enthusiasm or zeal for something is extreme or beyond normal limits. They've toned it down in the definition of just plain old fan: an enthusiastic devotee, follower, or admirer of a sport, pastime, celebrity, etc.

I really find it fun to be fanatic about stuff. I feel it adds color and depth and layers to my life. Is that weird? But what I actually do find weird, is when I come across people who can't really pinpoint anything that they are fans of. I mean, have you ever asked someone what they are into or what they like, or what they get excited about and they can't answer you? It baffles me.

So for now, weird or not, I will continue to get excited about strange things like books, and characters in those books, and actors and movies, and TV shows and musicians and bands and songs and soundtrack music and Broadway shows and authors and words and writing and food and chocolate and kids doing cool things, and family trips and seeing new places and history and exploring and learning. And hopefully you too are a fan of something, maybe some of the same things I am, or maybe some totally different things, like sports or shopping or surfing or...or...just something!

All I can say is, it's not going to matter how old I get, my tendency to get all fan-girly and excited about stuff won't be going away.

  1. Sometimes I feel like the loser who when asked what they're into just shrugs but I know that's not true. I'm totally into stuff but sometimes it seems like I forget what. Aww well. Love the pic.

  3. I'm a huge fan of stuff too - just not celebrities and such - but books, authors and probably a ton of sports.
