Genre: Science Fiction
Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone
Rating: PG-13
MY Rating: Two thumbs Up!
But I'm also a huge Andrew Garfield fan and so my instant next thought was, "Okay, I can do that!" And I didn't really care that they, the movie people, had decided it was already time for another Spider-man reincarnation. I mean, so what, right?
Still, I was worried about it, that it wouldn't measure up, that people would bash it, that Andrew Garfield really couldn't pull it off, that it would be stupid, etc. etc. You know... all those really deep important movie questions that we all love to ponder.
However, after having seen it yesterday as part of our holiday celebrations, I can report that, at least for me, none of that was an issue. I loved the movie! I loved Andrew Garfield in the title role, I loved the story, I loved the effects, I loved it all. Granted, I'm easy to please, but yes, I loved it.
We saw it at the IMAX theater... in 3D... so if that's your thing, you should do it. Flying around with Spider-man was pretty cool and tickled my stomach several times. Yeah, I'm a sucker for this stuff, does that make me geeky? I'm afraid so. Yeah, the louder, the more bone jarring, the bigger, the brighter... the better!
This version of Spider-man gave us more insight into Peter Parker's background and what was going on with his dad. It gave us sympathetic villain with a back story that had meaning. It felt real and human, in and among the superhero stuff. I really liked that.
But mostly I totally loved Andrew Garfield's portrayal of this character. In a word, he was awesome. If you've had reservations, you should just go see it and see what you think. Besides, the music is also awesome.
My only complaints were stupid things like... how can a school get nearly destroyed by some pretty massive fighting and yet they are back there going to school again the next day with no visible evidence. Same with getting shot in the leg and then bam... back at school! Same with destroying your bathroom, and then... everything is okay? See, these are the strange things I think about! But nothing very distracting.
Bottom line: Loved it!
Here's the trailer if you haven't yet seen it:
Great review! I thought Andrew Garfield did a great job too. I liked him better than Tobey McGuire, which I wasn't sure if I would.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I agree with almost everything you said, even the little things that bugged you. I'm not sure why I'm having a hard time quantifying my feelings. It may be just that it's Spider-Man and he's not my favorite superhero. I don't know.
Jenni: The more I think about it, the more I loved it.
DeleteI'm excited to see this ond because of the villain. He's always been a favorite. I do hate those little inconsistencies, though.
ReplyDeleteJenny: Glad you ended up liking it!
DeleteI am of that mind of why redo it so soon, but hey they are doing superman again.
ReplyDeleteI do like andrew garfield as an actor :)
Julie: I think we'll just have these superhero movies with us forever and ever! Andrew Garfield is amazing.
Deletei was skeptical when i first heard they were doing this and refused to see it up until the trailer. i then looked over at my husband and guiltily admitted that it looked pretty good--i mean, look at that cast! he smiled sheepishly and admitted the same.
ReplyDeletewe are saving our theater fund for batman, but will certainly have to catch spiderman on the big screen at the dollar theater.
thanks for the reassurance. looking forward to it even more, and eager to hear that soundtrack. i love me a good soundtrack!

L: I've been blasting the soundtrack (from Youtube) and it's really great.
DeleteI was really hesitant about this movie too, but when my mom was in town and we couldn't pass up a free sitter for the kids, this was the movie we ended up at. Surprise! I LOVED IT!!!! Great acting, loved the deeper delving into the story, and the special effects were pretty cool! I would recommend it too!! :)
ReplyDeleteI loved it too!!!! I wasn't expecting to, but the cast was so perfect.
