Books I Had a Strong Emotional Reaction To
1. The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck... one of the first books that I remember really making me weepy at the end.
2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak... all sorts of emotions in this one, but sadness is also a big one.
3. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card... one of the first books that made my jaw drop at the end and I remember thinking ... what the heck did I just read?
4. Virgil and Beatrice by Yann Martel... I wanted to throw this one across the room it made me so crazy.
5. Life of Pi by Yann Martel... another one where the ending made me go "wait, what?" in a big big way.
6. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck...this book makes me more frustrated than nearly any other book I've read.
7. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.... this one makes me weepy too. Also frustrated.
8. The Wimpy Kid books by Jeff Kinney... these books never fail to make me laugh out loud, and I rarely laugh out loud at a book.
9. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness... I don't even know what emotion to pin down on this one. All of them really! Well, except laughing because there is nothing funny about these books.
10. The Nanny Diaries by a couple of girls... so I threw one in that I really quite hated just so you know there ARE those kinds and this one I was disgusted over... both because of the story itself and the writing and just the whole thing. CRINGE.
What books have you reacted strongly to?
Oh, I can't believe I didn't put The Book Thief on my list. I can't read that one without crying!
ReplyDeleteCan you believe the only book on that list I have read is Grapes of Wrath?! Just more books to read in the future!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! You know what is sad... I can't remember how Ender's Game ended. I read it back when my dog died a few years ago and I don't think I retained it. I am thinking I should reread it...
ReplyDeleteI love your list! The Book Thief is one of my all time favorites. kaye—the road goes ever ever on
ReplyDeleteI had Knife on my list too - crazy stuff! I'm glad you had a few hate 'em books, since I think I put too many on my list :)
ReplyDeleteYay, you added a book you hated. ;) I'm thinking after reading Melissa's post and yours that I really need to read the Chaos Walking series.
ReplyDeleteNew to your blog. I had the same reaction to Ender's game, though in a good way. The book blew me away. It is in my top 5 books of all time, the only one of it's genre making the cut.
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked that The Book Thief isn't number 1 on your list! I knew it would be on your list, though.
ReplyDeleteI really need to read the other books on your lists. (And, I need to finish The Book Thief.) But, it looks like I'll be staying away from The Nanny Diaries, lol.
My stepdaughter loves the wimpy kid books. She is always laughing as she reads them and then she insists on reading excerpts aloud to me.
ReplyDeleteMelissa: SHAME shame! :)
ReplyDeleteAng: Oh boy, your list "to read" must be getting crazy!
Kailana: I need to re-read too, and see if my memory is right!
Kaye: The Book Thief is my VERY all time favorite! :)
Melissa: I still need to go check out your list.
Jenny: Yes, you do need to read that one. Very crazy, different books.
Melissa: Yes, I did LOVE Ender's Game. It blew me away for sure. Read it several times now.
Jenni: I figure it would be number 1 in every list I make, so I have to move it around a bit! Ha! :)
Reviews: Oh, there's so many things to quote. My favorite was about book clubs. I posted about it a long long time ago here:

This is funny. I was just saying today how I loved doing these lists, but I feel like I'm always talking about the same books.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally with you about The Grapes of Wrath. Waiting for something good to happen to these poor people was an exercise in frustration, for sure.
And The Knife of Letting Go. Ditto.
I have read almost all the books on your list and had very similar reactions to them - especially throwing Beatrice and Virgil across the room! I think it needs to be tied to The Knife of Letting Go though and then the two books thrown toghether!
