Review: The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron

Book: The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron (Newbery Winner 2007)
Genre: MG
Rating: B+
For: Fun
From: A book fair purchase I think.

This was my last book of the year, the one I was reading even as the ball dropped. And it was a fun one to go out on! A very cute book about a girl, named Lucky, who's mom died, and her dad is absent, so she ends up being raised by her dad's first wife, a French lady, who she really really loves.

The problem? She is afraid this situation won't last and so she is doing her best to figure out how to keep things the same. She feels that if she discovers her "higher power" like the people do in the AA meetings she eavesdrops at, that perhaps she will be able to control things to her liking.

She has a spunk and fiestiness that is awfully endearing and you are rooting for her from page one. It has a similar feel to Savvy, another Newbery award winner ("only" the honor though) with a fun writing style that really makes you feel like you are in the head of the character. Savvy grabbed and hung on more for me though, which is why I give this one just a little lower rating. I think I'll remember Savvy, whereas this one, I'm afraid I'll forget quickly.

Bottom line: A fun cute story that I really enjoyed.

  1. This was a good book but I was surprised that it won the Newbery. My daughter loved Savvy but not Scumble, found The Higher Power of Lucky boring.

Thanks for the review! This book reminded me of Everything on a Waffle ... similar feel.
