Review: The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Book: The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Genre: YA Science Fiction (Dystopian)
Rating: A
For: Fun! And the ongoing quest to "support your local authors!"

After all the pre-release reviews many of you did of this book which said "I couldn't put it down!" I was anxious to find out for myself if this was really the case.

It was. I couldn't put it down!

The story starts out with Thomas finding himself being hauled up in a big metal elevator, to a very strange place, and with all his memory gone. He doesn't know who he is, where he is, or what's going on at all. He is met by a bunch of boys, who have their own interesting slang language and who seem to be surviving on their own.

I don't really want to explain much more than that because it's important that we learn the details of this place right along with Thomas.

This book reminded me in many ways of The Hunger Games (as many others have mentioned) and Lord of the Flies, and even a bit of Ender's Game. Wow! Can you imagine! Having said that though, it is its own unique self too, and takes a path never before taken. The ending blew me away and wow... it's pretty much all I can say!

Just go read it. Really.

So put this on the list of those books I'm patiently (NOT) waiting for the next one. And how long will that be? Too long I'm guessing.

My only complaint? More romance! :) (Though maybe that will turn off all those reluctant reader boy types that are going to love this book. So never mind... keep it subtle! )

  8. I went and saw him on Tuesday night and he actually said that "Ender's Game" and "Lord of the Flies" were his inspiration for "The Maze Runner."
